In the early hours of the morning, Zhu Yu was startled awake by the sound of an alarm.
She got up immediately and rushed to the monitoring room to check for any issues.
The staff dormitories were being renovated, so all employees had returned home, leaving Zhu Yu as the only person in the massive zoo. Thankfully, the alarm had woken many of the animals, and on her way to the monitoring room, she could hear them chattering noisily:
— “What’s happening? What’s happening?”
— “What’s making that noise? What’s making that noise?”
— “I just want to sleep! I just want to sleep!”Some animals, not particularly bright, kept repeating the same phrases.
The smartest animals in the zoo were Tuan Tuan the panda and the White-Spotted Ferret. Both could engage in simple daily conversations with her.
When Zhu Yu checked the monitors, she didn’t immediately notice anything wrong—except for the White-Spotted Ferret.
The ferret was making an awful racket, clawing at the door with frantic urgency as if trying to escape. Its cries were sharp and piercing, full of distress.
Quickly grabbing her tranquilizer gun, Zhu Yu headed toward the White-Spotted Ferret’s enclosure. As soon as she entered the area, she felt a strange unease, as if she was being watched or stalked. The hair on her arms stood on end.
The White-Spotted Ferret was still screeching, the same kind of cry it had made when they first met and it had cursed her out.
Suddenly, a low roar echoed through the night. This was followed by heavy, deliberate footsteps and the sound of a powerful body brushing through the wind. Zhu Yu instinctively looked up.
Under the faint light of a streetlamp, she caught a fleeting glimpse of an enormous yellow shadow darting past before vanishing into the darkness.
A tiger.
Zhu Yu froze.
A tiger!??
Her legs felt weak as she gripped the tranquilizer gun tightly.
She had only ever seen tigers on TV or from a safe distance at zoos. Though majestic and beautiful, their terror was dulled by the safety barriers.
But the roar just now, the sheer size and power of the creature—she was awestruck.
It was magnificent.
If only their zoo had such a tiger, she thought. From what little she saw, this tiger was much larger than any she had encountered before. Its fur was vibrant, and its roar unmatched.
“Chirp chirp chirp—” The White-Spotted Ferret let out another shrill cry.
Snapping back to reality, Zhu Yu rushed into the enclosure, ready to comfort the terrified ferret with some specially prepared snacks. The White-Spotted Ferret, after all, was a foodie at heart.
But as she entered, she was stunned by what she saw.
Half of the White-Spotted Ferret’s room had collapsed. Thanks to the sturdy materials, it hadn’t completely caved in, but the structure was dented inward, and the door was badly deformed. The ferret was at the entrance, clawing at it in a frenzy.
Zhu Yu knocked on the door. “White-Spotted Ferret, step back. I’ll open it.”
The ferret looked up at her, then retreated slightly, squeaking urgently for her to hurry.
As soon as the door was open, the White-Spotted Ferret shot out like an arrow.
Zhu Yu chased after it, watching as the little ferret darted up a tree and scanned the surroundings from the highest branch, calling out, “Boss! Boss!”
