"Uncle, what exactly are you trying to do?" He Xiao asked Bai Shuo the moment they left the zoo.

Without even glancing at him, Bai Shuo replied casually, "I want to be a zookeeper."

He Xiao almost burst into tears. "Uncle, calm down. If you become a zookeeper, you won’t be able to play on your phone all day, sleep until noon, or stay up all night playing. You’ll hate it."

During Bai Shuo’s recent stay at the He family estate, he had behaved like a rebellious teenager addicted to the internet—constantly glued to his phone, tapping here and scrolling there, with a completely irregular schedule.

At first, He Xiao’s father, He Ruifeng, would come to check on Bai Shuo every morning and call him to eat breakfast.

He Xiao couldn’t help feeling jealous, thinking, ‘When I sleep in, my dad never treats me so kindly.’

Later, Bai Shuo told He Ruifeng not to disturb his rest and playtime, as he had his own rhythm. From then on, He Ruifeng stopped waking him up, but he instructed the housekeeper to prepare plenty of snacks so Bai Shuo could have something to eat if he missed mealtime.

Watching all this, He Xiao was left speechless with jealousy. To him, his father had always been a proper and somewhat old-fashioned man, only ever showing special treatment to Bai Shuo because of their family’s ancestral gratitude toward him.

But wasn’t this a bit “too” good? The more He Xiao observed Bai Shuo, the more he disliked him.

He Ruifeng noticed He Xiao’s attitude and decided to explain. "He Xiao, do you remember being seriously ill as a child?"

He Xiao vaguely remembered hearing about it from his parents. Apparently, when he was two or three years old, he collapsed after playing outside and fell into a deep sleep, unable to wake up. His parents sought help from doctors and other experts, and only after many efforts did he recover.

Since then, He Xiao had been healthy, rarely falling sick. A minor cold or fever would pass quickly, and he hadn’t given the incident much thought.

"What does that have to do with this?" He Xiao asked.

He Ruifeng explained, "The truth is, it wasn’t as simple as it sounds. Your mother and I took you to countless doctors, but none could help. We even invited many spiritual masters to our home. In the end, it was placing that white tiger painting in your room that woke you up. When you regained consciousness, you happily said you saw a white tiger in your dream. That’s when I realized it was Bai Shuo’s power that saved you."

He Xiao’s jaw dropped. "Dad, did you really make up such a story just to make me obedient to Bai Shuo?"

He Ruifeng replied calmly, "Do you know when we built the family museum?"

He continued, "I’m not gullible enough to blindly believe in some ancestral tale. I saw it with my own eyes—things science couldn’t explain. Combine that with our family’s tradition of collecting tiger-related artifacts, and when Bai Shuo appeared, I knew we had to treat him as an honored guest."

Reluctantly, He Xiao came to accept the story. After calling his mother for confirmation, he realized her version matched his father’s exactly.

Though he still found Bai Shuo irritating, he had no choice but to show him respect out of gratitude for saving his life.

But allowing Bai Shuo to become a zookeeper? Absolutely not!

"Uncle, you’ve never worked before. You don’t know how exhausting it is. Early mornings, long hours, earning only a few thousand yuan a month—not even enough to cover one of your meals. You have everything you need at our house; isn’t that better?" He Xiao’s words were sincere, though he had his own ulterior motive. He suspected Bai Shuo’s intentions with Lingxi Wildlife Zoo weren’t pure. Now that He Xiao considered himself Yanyan’s godfather and felt deeply connected to the zoo, he wanted to protect it.
