It'd been a while since Atsumu caught himself staring at [Name]. Usually, he was well aware that he was staring, but he couldn't help himself. It was just the way she looked like she could take on the world at any time. He wasn't one to care for others' opinion on him and it was pretty rare to see people like him nowadays. That was probably one of the reasons he first started looking at her. To everyone else, at the beginning of their first year, she was just some arrogant bitch who thought she was too good for them, but she had showed them it wasn't arrogance when she got into her very first fight.
Atsumu was there when it happened. It was probably then that he started admiring her. Contrary to popular belief then, she was very humble, and barely acknowledged his compliments afterwards.
"Don't praise people when there's nothing to praise them about." That's what she had told him, and it wasn't just his fanboy self that talked when he told people he agreed with her logic. He himself has been thinking the same thing all his life. There was no reason to praise people who didn't deserve it.
Still, he had never believed, not even for one second, that [Name] didn't deserve praise, and the way she was keeping her head up right now just further proved his point. When he had seen her trying to fight that guy off and the way he was looking at her, he felt fear ripple through his body like it never did before. He couldn't imagine how terrifying it must have been for her.
For the first time, he had truly been grateful for being a boy. This kind of things didn't happen as much with them.
He felt disgusted with himself for even thinking about it that way.
As if she had felt his gaze, the girl turned her head in his direction, locking eyes with him after barely a second. Usually, he would've looked away and pretended he had never been looking at her, but today, he held her gaze. [Last name] [Name] represented the Bushido Code like no one else he knew. That also meant never backing down from a fight, even when it was already lost.
That battle against her own mind was lost the day it all started, but he was willing to help her win. He felt like this was the opportunity to show her that having friends wasn't that bad. He transferred his weight to the balls of his feet, ready to take a step, but stopped himself at the last second.
Did she even want to see his face at all? She was trying to forget, was his mere existence a giant reminder of everything? Then again, what good would it do to ignore her distress?
Still, his feet felt rooted in place. He got reminded of his feelings that day. He'd been terrified for a few seconds, but he had acted, because he was no coward and he had never been. He shut his eyes closed and shook his head, ignoring how [Name]'s gaze still pierced through his body.
In the end, he turned on his heel and walked away.
There's a first or everything. At that moment, he was a coward.

"[Last name]? [Last name], are you listening to me?" The girl was snapped out of her daze when a hand suddenly got in her face, waving in front of her.
"Huh? What?" She turned to the blue-haired girl beside her and furrowed her brows. Mizu smirked and wiggled her brows.
"Were ya staring at Miya just now?" [Name] blinked before walking away, ignoring the loud "hey!" behind her. A second later, the swimming club captain was in her face again. "Don't ignore me! You're not helping your case!" She scoffed and glared at the older girl.
