" what you expected "

Ali drove me to her house, letting me rummage through her wardrobe while she scrambled to get ready. I slid into her room like I was a regular fixture, one of her hand-me-downs at this point.
She offered me a spare mascara, something I kept stashed in her purse—because, honestly, our makeup styles could not have been more different. She was all soft and glowy, and I? Well, I was more into a heavy-handed, statement-making look—bright eyeshadow, bold lips, the whole nine yards. We didn't exactly match in the makeup department, but that was part of our charm.
As I smeared mascara on my lashes, I could hear Ali's voice from behind me, casual and light. "I was thinking... about going up to Bobby," she mused. My hand froze mid-swipe, my mascara wand perilously close to my lashes as my eyes widened in mock horror.
"Really? You sure have a thing for Cobra Kai's," I teased, half joking, half serious. I couldn't help it. There was something about that dojo—its jocks and jerks—that seemed to captivate her, and yet I still had no idea why. She shot me a look and threw a pillow at my head.
"Shut up," she huffed, the words laced with playful annoyance.
I managed to compose myself, carefully finishing off my mascara. "Well, he's kind of cute, right?" I said, smirking. "And without that Cobra Kai stuff, he's... sweet, I guess." She paused, eyeing a dress for a moment before tossing it aside and reaching for something else.
"So was Johnny," I added, as though it were an afterthought, the words hanging in the air as if they might have weight. She rolled her eyes dramatically.
"Shut up," she said again, this time more forcefully. "Fine—Bobby's off the list. That leaves me with... oh wait! Nobody." She slumped dramatically, a goofy grin spreading across her face as she snatched the hairbrush off my dresser.
