" a thing called communication "

"I wanted to say thank you, once again," I say, my voice breaking the stillness between us as we make our way back to the apartments.
Daniel and I walk side by side, our steps in sync as we head down the familiar path toward our separate homes.
It's a strange kind of moment, the air crisp but not too cold, the evening stretching out ahead of us with its quiet promise. After begging my mom to let me walk, she finally relented. I can't deny the fact that I had a personal motive-Daniel had no ride back, and it seemed like the universe was offering me a chance to make up for... everything.
We both have our hands stuffed in our pockets, a comfortable distance between us but not enough to make things awkward. The last few hours had been surprisingly nice, considering we'd spent so long dancing around each other, every word laced with tension. But now? The air feels lighter. For the first time in... I don't know, weeks? Maybe months?
I don't hate the guy. I'm actually enjoying his company. And that's something I haven't felt for a while.
"I mean, it wasn't a problem," Daniel says, his voice almost nonchalant, as though he's used to this kind of thing. "You saved me from going to science class, and I saved your life," he adds with a smirk. I can't help but chuckle. It's the kind of casual banter we'd never had before, but somehow, it feels so natural.
We walk in silence for a bit, the quiet punctuated by the occasional chirp of birds as they prepare for the coming dusk. The sky is slowly bleeding into deeper shades of purple and gold, the daylight hanging on just a little longer than usual.
