" forget it "

Spring had settled over Reseda, painting the sky in soft pastels and drenching the air in the scent of freshly cut grass.

It should've been the perfect season—warm but not unbearable, breezy but not cold—but for me, it only meant three things: allergies were thriving, the sun was getting real bold, and track practice was absolutely obliterating me.

I sat on the track, legs sprawled out in front of me, my body a miserable mix of sweat, exhaustion, and regret. A half-empty water bottle sat limply in my grip as I gulped down the rest like my life depended on it—because, honestly, at this point, it did.

My calves were throbbing, my lungs felt like they had been wrung out like an old dish towel, and my entire body ached in places I didn't even know could ache. But, on the bright side, I finally felt fit. Well, fit-ish. I still wanted to curl up and die, but at least I wasn't wheezing like I actually was dying. Progress.

Beside me, Mia collapsed onto the ground with all the grace of a dropped sack of flour, dramatically fanning herself. "Ugh, my legs are on fire," she groaned, rolling her head toward me like even moving was too much effort.

The sun glared down at us, relentless, turning the track into a frying pan. Mia let out a long breath, closing her eyes like she was about to ascend to another plane of existence. "This should be illegal. No one should willingly run this much."

I let out a tired breath of laughter, still catching my own. "You're telling me."

Mia turned her head, squinting at me. "You good? You've been quiet."
