The world felt heavy. My body ached like I had been hit by a train—no, more like a dozen. Every breath sent a dull pain through my ribs, and my limbs felt weighted down by something unseen. Slowly, my eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dim lighting of a hospital room. The steady beep of the heart monitor filled the silence.
I was alive.
The ceiling blurred in and out of focus, my mind sluggish as I tried to process where I was. The last thing I remembered was holding Eri, her quirk spiraling out of control. Then… nothing.
A low voice brought me back to reality.
“You’re awake.”
I turned my head slightly, wincing at the stiffness in my neck. Sitting beside my bed, arms crossed, was Aizawa. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes softened slightly when I met his gaze.
“Aizawa…” My voice came out hoarse, barely more than a whisper.
He stood, stepping closer to my bed. “You’ve been out for a couple of days. The doctors said your body was severely overexerted. You’re lucky it wasn’t worse.”
The words barely registered before panic surged through me. “Eri—where is she? Is she—”
“She’s fine,” he interrupted, his voice firm but calm. “She’s in quarantine. Her quirk is still unstable, and the doctors don’t want to take any chances. But she’s alive.”
Relief hit me like a crashing wave, my body sinking back against the pillows. “I need to see her.”
“You will,” Aizawa said, “but not yet. You need to recover first.”
I clenched my fists. I didn’t care about my injuries. I just needed to know she was okay.
Aizawa must have seen the frustration in my expression because his voice softened. “She’s been asking for you.”
My heart clenched. I had promised her I wouldn’t let go, and yet here I was, lying useless in a hospital bed while she was alone.
Before I could say anything, the door opened. Izuku, Mirio, and a few others walked in, their faces brightening when they saw me awake.
“Y/N!” Izuku was the first to rush over, his green eyes filled with concern. “How are you feeling?”
“Like I got thrown through a dozen buildings,” I admitted with a weak smile.
Mirio stepped closer, his usual energetic grin subdued. “You really scared us,” he said. “I knew you were strong, but… that was something else.”
I could tell he was struggling, trying to stay positive despite everything that had happened. I glanced at him, noting the way his shoulders sagged slightly, the way his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.
He had lost his Quirk.
And I had failed to save Eri in time.
A heavy silence hung in the air, broken only by the sound of the heart monitor.
Then, the door creaked open again.
“Hey… can we come in?”
I turned my head slightly. Kirishima stood in the doorway, hands in his pockets, his expression uncertain. Behind him were Uraraka and Tsuyu.
Aizawa sighed. “Just don’t overwhelm her.”
I smiled weakly. “I’m okay, really.”
Kirishima stepped closer, his red eyes scanning over my injuries. “Damn, Y/N… you really went all out, huh?”
