Autumn mornings. Quiet and peaceful. They blanket the landscape with a thick fog and fresh dewdrops. Changing colors paint the rolling hills and wooded forests. All else seems to stand still as nature takes the main stage.
Red Citroën C4 arrived in front of Kadic Academy.
"Sweetie, we are here," my mom said, while I had my backpack in my lap and sat in the passenger seat. I was quiet and looked around. Why did I need to be here?
"Lyra? Are you okay, sweetie?" my mom asked, concerned, after I didn't answer her.
"Yes, Mom, I'm okay," I said, trying to convince myself more than trying to convince her.
"Honey, this needed to happen," she said, looking me in the eyes.
I like looking into her, ocean blue eyes. When I look into her eyes, I always have a feeling, like I'm staring at the ocean. So beautiful.
"Why do I need to be here? I was happy in school in Lyon." I said.
"Darling, that incident wasn't a small thing," she said.
"But it wasn't my fault!" I said, crossing my arms over my chest.
"You were part of it," she said.
I stayed silent and looked away.
"Did they find Dad?" I asked.
"Lyra..."
"Did they find Dad?" I asked again.
"No, he is dead, five years ago, remember?" she asked.
"They said that, just because they can't find him," I said.
"Lyra Durand."
"What?"
"Drop it. Your father has been dead for five years," she said sternly.
"Speaking of your Dad, before he died, he worked here," she said, and I turned my head to look at her.
"He did?" I asked.
"Yes, with his...colleague," she said.
Froggy flashback
"You don't understand it, do you? This is too risky. XANA cannot be...we need to shut it down, before it's too late."
"Franz, don't tell me you are scared?" said...my Dad?
"Elias, please, XANA is dangerous."Franz...Uncle Franz? said that.
"Franz, don't be a coward now. We are working for this, our whole lives," my Dad said.
"Elias, they are after us. If we don't shut all this down—"
"What can they do to us?"
"I'm going in—"
"What? No, you can't!"
"Elias, you can either go with — and me in — or stay here," Franz said.
I heard a distorted voice, saying, "Your father is not dead...Lyra."
Present
"Lyra?"
"What?"
"Sweetie, are you okay?" Mom asked.
"Yes...yes, sorry, let's go," I said, with a soft smile.
I got a paper with subjects, when I have them, when are breaks, when I should wake up, when is breakfast, lunch and dinner and when I need to go to sleep.
I met a gym professor, Jim Morales, who is in charge of the boys' and girls' dorm rooms, to make sure everyone follows the rules.
"No bringing boys after 10 PM," Jim said.
