Mike opened the front door and practically ran inside, giving his mother a quick 'hello' and scurrying off upstairs into his bedroom. "What's up with him? Is he really that nervous?" I wondered.
Tony shrugged. "I don't know. I'll go check on him."
I watched Tony walk down the hall, casually holding his hands in his pockets, until he suddenly bolted out of sight when he reached the stairs. I swear those two were acting way off their usual scale of weirdness.
"Hello darling!" Vivian beamed as she pulled me into a hug. "I'm so glad you could make it. How are my gorgeous grandchildren?" She asked, taking me by my arm and dragging me into the kitchen. She always did this. She always wanted to talk to me first. She said it was because she'd always been surrounded by men, meaning her husband, sons and their friends, it was nice to finally have a girl amongst the group. I could tell she was just as excited to meet Mike's girlfriend as the rest of us.
Sadly though, she immediately put me to work on cutting the vegetables for dinner. I was so gonna get back at Vic for letting me do this. Normally, this was his job.
"Hey mom, hey babe, how's it going?" Vic asked as he walked into the kitchen. I looked up from the green paprika that I was cutting, to find Vic walking up to me with his phone in hand, aimed at me.
"Are you filming again?" I whined. This wasn't the first time he had done that. He came with the announcement not too long ago that he wanted to make the band's first music video, and for some reason he started filming random things: Me playing with the kids. . . me snoring in my sleep –which wasn't very charming. . . the guys being total fools. . . and now this.
"By the way, you should be doing this." I then pointed out, waving at the veggies in front of me and discarding my own question since it was obvious that he was filming again.
"I know, I know." Vic muttered in amusement. He turned the little camera towards him and frowned. "I normally do most of the cooking since I'm like an amazing cook and all, but this time, it's her turn." Then he turned the back of the phone back to me.
"You seriously do not have to record this, you know?" I muttered below my breath, concentrating on cutting the onions next.
"I do." Vic simply stated. "Because in ten years you can look back at this and be all, oh look that's back when I was still a horrible cook, but now I'm great, not Vic-kind-of-great, but pretty great."
I rolled my eyes and chuckled. "I'm not a horrible cook, you ass."
"Stop teasing your girlfriend, Victor. You do realize she is holding a really sharp knife, right?" Vivian noted, waving her whisk towards the camera.
"Yeah, listen to your mother, Victor." I taunted playfully. I honestly wasn't a horrible cook. Vivian was amazing of course, definitely much better. . . she knew her way around spices. And obviously she had taught Vic a thing or two. . . or hundred, who's counting anyway. But I had my own specialties it just wasn't Mexican food.
Slowly but surely everyone started to come together in the kitchen, sitting down around the island. Even Mike and Tony. "Hey, dude, point the camera at me man!" Jaime insisted to Vic.
Vic simply chuckled and did as he was told. Jaime cleared his throat, put his hands together and smiled into the camera. "Ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you all to cooking with the Fuentes ladies!" He announced happily.
"My name is not Fuentes." I retorted, throwing some diced onions in his direction.
"Well it should be." Victor senior then stated firmly, pointing his finger at Vic.
