| Your POV |
"Okay, why do they all get to pick their colors, but I can't?" you ask Hiro.
"They didn't. I just know which colors would look the best and please them," Hiro explains.
You groan as you examine the blueprints of your costume. A dark orange armor. You're not a fan of the color. Your power is the ability of super seeing and hearing. To say that you're bummed is an understatement. All of your friends have power that goes along with what they're good at working with. Honey Lemon, the chemist, for example, has a periodic table on her bag, where she can type out a formula and have a sphere of dangerous chemicals. Even Fred, the comic book nerd has a special kaiju suit that has fire breathing powers. And because you've never expressed an interest in anything, Hiro has just hooked up an enhanced chip to your helmet.
"I'm just going to be honest with you," you say, "I hate it. It's hideous. And how am I going to be useful to the team when Baymax here will be able to fly, punch, and provide medical assistance when needed?"
"We're all going to play a part in this," Hiro tells you.
"And what's my part? Being Baymax's backup?"
"Your power isn't anything like his. He just has a scanner. Will you calm down? You're a part of this team just like anyone else. I'm sorry that I can please you all of the time. We're not doing this for looks. We're doing this to catch that guy and avenge my brother." Hiro rolls his eyes and starts gliding his fingers across his computer screen to build your suit.
You sigh. "You're right. I'm sorry," you say. It feels like you say it all of the time. Hiro has never apologized to you for anything, even if it is technically his fault or turn to. "I shouldn't be so selfish. I just feel like I'm not a part of you guys because I'm not insanely smart."
Hiro frowns. "You are a part of us, ___. We need you."
You smile and nod.
"Hey, dude. How's it coming along?" Fred asks. The team floods into the garage.
"Hey, guys," Hiro says. "Honey Lemon, Go Go, your suits are complete. Wasabi's lasers are still in the works, but as soon as I finish up ___'s model here, I'll finish them."
"Wow, Hiro. You've been working fast," Honey Lemon comments.
"He didn't sleep last night," you say. "Or the night before."
"I'm fine," Hiro says, taking a long sip of his coffee. He hands it to you. "Bleh. Did you forget sugar?"
"No, I added a spoonful of it," you say.
"Can you go add more?" he requests. "Go Go and Wasabi, come look at these diagrams and see if the coding is correct. Honey Lemon, check out the chemical bag and see if the chemicals will react together. Fred, I'm going to need you to help describe this kaiju monster of yours."
You blink and step back as your friends jump into their science stuff. Everyone fits in so well together. You're the odd one out. You grind your teeth in anger as you leave the garage. As soon as you stomp into the cafe, Aunt Cass notices you.
"Hey, sweetie," she says. "Another coffee run?"
"Sugar, this time," you reply. You hand her the styrofoam cup.
She rolls her eyes and takes it to the back counter. As she spoons out a small amount of sugar, she says, "Tadashi used to get on Hiro for using so much sugar because it ruins the taste of the coffee. But I know that Tadashi had been guilty of drinking some very sweetened coffee every now and then when his schoolwork went well into the night." She smiles sadly. "What I would give to go back to those times." She hands you back the cup.
"Thank you, Aunt Cass," you reply. You turn back to the doors and leave. Back in the garage, Honey Lemon and Go Go are checking out their new armor.
"Oh! ___! What do you think?" Honey Lemon asks, gesturing to the pile of pink at her feet.
You smile. "It's nice."
"It'll look even better when I can finally try it out!"
You go to Hiro, who is now working with Wasabi. "Here you go-"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Wasabi says. "You can't be over here! These plasma lasers are too dangerous and you don't have goggles or safety gloves on."
Hiro looks over at you. "He's right, ___. It's not safe for you."
"I'm pretty sure that I can handle it," you say.
Hiro sighs. "Can you just listen for once? Go sit at my desk. As soon as I'm done, I'll work on your suit."
"Okay," you say. "Well, what can I do?"
"You can sit there and wait," he clarifies.
You don't say a word. You just slowly take your seat. Are you really needed here? Does Hiro need you for anything? He seems happy, or he's holding it together well, at least. You glare at him and pick up the coffee. Just because you can, you take a drink of it. The taste of the coffee has been buried in sugar, so it tastes more like sugar water. You take another drink, and then another. Soon enough, you find yourself at the bottom of the cup.
"Oops," you mutter. You feel the coffee waking you up. You sit the cup down on the desk as he approaches it.
"Okay, guys. Go ahead and take your suits to Fred's house, but don't try them out yet. I'm going to finish yours," he points to Fred, "Baymax's, and ___'s."
"See you later, Hiro!" Honey Lemon exclaims, "Good luck!"
Everyone quickly leaves the garage. Hiro pulls up his white sleeves and examines the model of your suit in front of him. "Alright. That looks pretty good." He grabs his supplies and turns back to grab his coffee. You bite your lip to contain your laughter as he lifts it and realizes that it's empty. "What- ___!"
You burst into laughter, "I'm sorry," you say. "Actually, no. I'm not."
"Ugh!" Hiro drops the cup. "You have to get me another one."
"No, I don't," you say, crossing your arms.
Hiro smirks. "I'll end up making you get me another."
"Yeah, okay." You roll your eyes and pick up the cup. You throw it at him. He blinks when it bounces off of his head. You laugh again.
"That's it," Hiro says. He lunges for you. You dodge his arms and run to the other side of the lab. Hiro chases you as you laugh. "You're so annoying!" You leap on the couch just as Hiro's arms wrap around you. You try to squirm away, only to have your wrist twisted in Hiro's grasp. The flash of pain makes you stop fighting. You fall on the and yelp. Hiro falls down on top of you and immediately gets up. "Oh man, did I hurt you?" He asks.
You wince as you sit up. You rub your wrist. "No, I'm okay," you say softly.
Hiro sits down beside you and reaches for your hand. He takes it in his and softly runs his fingers down your wrist. "Does it hurt?"
"No," you say softly.
Hiro's eyes meet yours. You're pleasantly surprised to see the warmth in his brown eyes. They've been cold and distant for so long. "You're sure you're okay?" he asks gently. You nod slowly. "Baymax," he calls, breaking your gaze. You frown when he gets off of the couch. "Can you scan her?" He goes right back to work on the suits, leaving you alone with the robot.
