Hi, me again, thought you'd seen the last of me but fanwarriors, I'm back after my hiatus. Unlike Sherlock *sigh*.
So yeah, that's my new name for you guys, fanwarriors.
I am also apologizing in advance for the feels caused by this chapter.Your view
The doors, you are about to go through the doors of the Maze. You are sending yourself and all other gladers into that griever invested hell- hole. You grab your bow and your quiver of arrows, your mind racing. Your heart is beating like a tribal drum. Your body is shaking and your lip trembles at the daunting thought of going into that wicked place."(Y/N)?" Newt stutters, breaking you away from your frightening thoughts of doom and peril.
"Yeah," You reply while fiddling with your hands, trying not to show you are petrified.
"It's okay to be afraid, I'll get Thomas to stay with you. It will be fine, trust me." He smiled even though he wished he could protect you instead of Thomas. Alby is being a pain in the butt and is forcing Newt to lead the 'parade'.
You kiss the top of Newt's head and manage to smile for him.
"Just be careful, I don't want your limp getting worse," You laugh, trying desperately to lighten the mood.
He smiled at you and moved a loose strand of your hair behind your ear.
"I will be careful, my love. Please, don't be the hero just stay safe, darling." He sighs before leaving to speak to Alby.
Before you know you are running towards the Maze doors with Genesis beside you.
--------------Time skip---------------
After the longest hour of your life, you arrive with the rest of the gladers at the long alley that leads up to the last turn before the cliff - a short corridor to the right that branched off like a stem of the letter T. They had all slowed at the corner and then stopped when Minho halted. He turned around with a grim face and whispered " Do you hear that?"
It was then that you hear the sounds of many grievers. A dozen of them, maybe more and they were waiting for the gladers.
"Well, we knew we'd have to fight," Your love, Newt says.
Suddenly, the grievers come alive and now more had appeared at the other end of the alley. The gladers were surrounded. There was nowhere to go. The gladers compressed into a tighter group around you. Your eyes dart to Newt, Thomas and Alby who were deep in conversation. You strained your ears and pushed through the crowd to try to hear what they were talking about. When you get close enough you hear Alby mutter.
"Maybe I should...." He trailed off and started walking forward -in the direction of the Cliff - slowly, as if in a trance. You watch in awe and horror - you couldn't believe your eyes.
"Alby?" Newt cried. "Get back here!"
Alby didn't respond but instead took off running , heading towards the Grievers and the Cliff.
"Alby!" Newt screamed.
Alby jumped into one of the monsters causing Newt to leave Thomas's side and begin to move forward.
Suddenly, six grievers attack the boy in a blur of metal and skin. Thomas grabbed Newt by the arms before he could go any further, then pulled him backwards.
"Let go!" Newt yelled, struggling to break loose.
"Are you nuts?" Thomas shouted. "There's nothing you can do!"
You can't watch as more Grievers swarmed over Alby, cutting and snapping at Alby. You run over to Newt, who is now on the ground with his head in the hands. You lift Newt's head so he is looking into your eyes and you wipe his tears away as he mutters about how he could've stopped Alby.
"You couldn't have stopped him, Newt. Stop beating yourself up and stand up, stand up for me! I beg you, I can't have you getting this far to give up!" You cry.
After a few minutes of mourning, Newt stands up with help from you and kisses your head.
"Thank you, my angel," He whispers.
You never liked Alby but he was like a brother to Newt, you mentally tell yourself to make a grave for him somewhere safe when you can.
"We can't waste what he did," Minho started. "We'll fight them if we have to, make a path to the Cliff for Thomas. Get him in the Hole and then let him do his thing."
Thomas looks at the three sets of grievers and nods.
"Hopefully they'll go dormant for a while. We should only need a minute or so to punch in the code." Thomas enquires.
"How can you guys be so heartless?" Newt murmured, the disgust in his voice surprising even me.
"What do you want, Newt?" Minho sassed. "Should we all dress up and have a funeral?"
Newt didn't respond, so you decided you would.
"Minho, for once in your shucking life, can you act like a decent human being? If you want to deal with this by having an attitude, don't take it out on people who need a moment to reflect. You do know that it takes time to mourn, afterall if it was Thomas you would be on the ground weeping like a big baby. And heaven forbid it, if it was Genesis, you'd never recover! Even though she's my sister. Some of us need a moment to grieve."
You can't help but raise your voice, your annoyance at Minho's outburst growing by the minute.Minho stops and shame washes over his face. Your sister, Genesis, looks at you with an expression of regret, almost as if she's apologising for Minho.
"Alby didn't want to go back to his old life." Genesis speaks up on Minho's part. "He sacrificed himself for us....and they aren't attacking us, so maybe it worked. We'd be heartless if we wasted it."
You nod at that statement and Newt just shrugs and closes his eyes. Before you could check on him, Minho turned and faced the huddled group of gladers.
"Listen up! Number one priority is to protect Thomas. Get him to the Cliff and the Hole so-"
Minho's speech was interrupted by the sounds of the Grievers coming to life. You watch in horror as spikes pop up out of the blubbery skin; their bodies shuddered and pulsed. They begin to move forward, in unison. They charged at the gladers.
Alby's sacrifice had failed miserably.
