The first thing I heard was beeping. It felt like it was cutting through my skull, which was pounding. I'd never been in so much pain. I could tell through my eyelids that wherever I was was super bright. Both of my hands were being held, and I could hear quiet sobbing in the room.
I tried to open my mouth to speak, but it was so dry that I could barely peel my lips apart.
I managed to squeak out. "Water."
One of the people let go of my hand, and all of a sudden a straw was placed at my lips. I took a sip and then swallowed, and re-attempted to open my eyes.
It worked, but everything was so bright and white that I needed to blink a few times. My vision was blurry at the edges but slowly everything began to focus.
Josh was the first thing I was, smiling above me, although tears were streaming down his face. My mum was there too, which confused me. How did she get here so quickly?
I reached up to touch my head, and felt bandages instead of skin. As I ran my hand across the cotton, I touched a tender spot and hissed in pain.
"I'm going to get a doctor in here."
Josh ran out of the room, leaving me with my mum, who was just sobbing uncontrollably. She was squeezing my hand, almost cutting off the blood supply.
"Elizabeth, you're awake. Do you know why you're in hospital?"
I thought hard for a moment. It all came back to me at once.
"I was shoved and hit my head. How long have I been here?"
The doctor checked her notes.
"Just over two weeks. Your mum and boyfriend haven't left your side."
"Two weeks? Josh, you should be touring!" I was trying to speak loudly but my voice cracked and I started coughing violently.
I was instructed to drink more water, but I wasn't done with Josh.
"Are you insane? You have a job to do and you put it all on hold for no reason!"
I'd never seen Josh angry, but a vein started to pop in his neck.
"No reason! You think that my girlfriend being in hospital in a coma is no reason? I think you're the insane one right now, Lizzie."
"You can't just call off a tour! I appreciate that you were worried about me, but there's thousands of people who have been let down over the last two weeks!"
Josh stood up. "Why can't you understand that I don't care about them right now? I've spent the last two weeks glued to this chair, scared that you were never going to wake up. I love you, Lizzie, but at this moment in time, it seems that my feelings obviously don't matter to you."
He stormed out of the room, my mum and doctor staring after him. They both turned to me.
"Stress really isn't something you should be putting yourself through, Elizabeth," the doctor told me. She looked at her chart.
"I'm going to do a few check ups, but now that you're awake, you should be able to go home in a few days, although I would advise that you don't work for a few months."
I just nodded, knowing that my mum would make me go back to England, and I'd probably lose contact with Josh.
...
I was right. As soon as I was let out of the hospital, mum bought tickets for us to fly back home to England.
I knew I had to go and say goodbye to the band and crew, so we made our way to the tour bus.
I walked in slowly, everyone but Josh in the lounge. They all gave me hugs and fussed over me.
"I'm fine guys, I just came to say goodbye."
Jenna hugged me again, careful of my head, which was still in bandages.
"We understand, but we're all going to miss you so much."
I sniffled as she pulled away.
"Where's Josh?"
They all looked between each other.
"We don't know. He came back from the hospital on the day you woke up, saying that you were fine and he wanted us to continue the tour. We thought it was a bit weird, so we said no, so he ran off and we haven't seen him since." Tyler looked pained. His best friend was missing, and it was all my fault.
My mum coughed behind me, reminding me that we had a plane to catch.
"Can I leave a note?"
I grabbed some paper and a pen and scribbled quickly, before folding it a few times and passing it to Jenna.
"Can you give this to him when he comes back?"
She nodded, and they all hugged me again before I left the bus, scared I had ruined everything.
