Toby walked around the house, trying to find a way to smother his boredom. He passed the bedroom doors, admiring the uniqueness that each occupant had embellished their own door with, reflecting each of their personalities. Sally's door was painted bright pink, with childish drawings of mythical creatures drawing in crayon at the bottom. Jane's was plain shiny black, and Toby could make out his reflection in the shine. Jeff's door was white with red smears and splatters, in what was most likely blood. Eyeless Jacks door was deep blue, the same colour as his mask, with black paint dripping down the front. Ben had a green door, which he had decorated with high-tech looking patterns running up and down it, reminding Toby of the inside of a computer. Toby kept walking, admiring each door, until he came to his personal favourite. It was Laughing Jack's. The door was tall and black with white stripes. A string of colourful, flashing fairy lights ran along the top. From inside the room, Toby could hear the faint sound of carnival music, cheerful and jolly, but with an undertone of malice. Toby had never been inside Laughing Jack's room, but he was bored, and so knocked on the door loudly. A stream of light coloured smoke drifted under the door, filing the hallway. Suddenly there was a loud pop, and there stood the monochrome clown himself, arms stretched wide, bowing deeply. He tilted his head up and looked at Toby, smiling widely.
"Why hellooooo there Ticci Toby," he said in a singsong voice. He held a black-clawed hand out towards Toby.
" Would you like to see my carnival Toby?" he asked pleasantly. Toby nodded quickly, taking the clown's hand. There was a puff of smoke, and Toby found himself standing in a loud, cheerful carnival scene. Laughing Jack led Toby towards a small group of children. Toby noticed Sally and Lazari standing to one side, huge grins on their faces. The children cheered as Laughing Jack came near them.
"Hellooooo my children," he sang, "I'm terribly sorry to keep you all waiting, we have another visitor! This here is my friend, Ticci Toby! Please make him feel welcome!" The children all ran towards Toby, grabbing his hands and pulling him towards the rides. Toby laughed and followed them, allowing himself to be pulled into a Ferris wheel passenger car. About 5 children got in with him, including Sally and Lazari, who were giggling and sharing a blood coloured stick of fairy floss.
"Would you like some fairy floss Toby?" Sally asked sweetly. Lazari gave him a shy smile over the lollypop she was holding. Toby smiled and took a piece of fairy floss.
"Mmmh, t-this is a-amazing!" he exclaimed. Sally and Lazari giggled and nodded, each taking another piece and stuffing it into their mouths. Toby ran around from ride to ride, followed by Sally, Lazari and a swarm of other children. Laughing Jack was thrilled to see Toby having a ball, and joined in on many games. The clown had seemed rather frightening when Toby had first met him, but he was actually very kind and fun, hoisting Toby up onto his shoulders and skipping around the carnival, singing Pop Goes The Weasel. Laughing Jack handed out many sweets and candy's to all of the children throughout the day, Giving Toby, Sally and Lazari only the pastel yellow coloured ones, the non-poisonous ones. The children began getting sleepy from the candies, and Laughing Jack led then towards a large black tent.
"Would you like to come and see my workshop Toby?" he asked quietly, out of earshot of Sally and Lazari. Toby had heard stories of what happened to the souls of the children in Laughing Jack's tent. He noticed the clown licking his lips, and saw the hunger in his black eyes.
"N-No thank you," he declined politely, "I have had l-lots of f-fun today. T-Thank you Laughing Jack. May I c-come back another t-time?" he asked hopefully. Laughing Jack chuckled, smiling at Toby.
"Of course Toby!" he sang, "We would love to have to back! Be sure to come and knock on my door again soon!" He chuckled as the carnival faded away. Toby blinked, and when he opened his eyes once more, he was back in the mansion, in the clown's room. He noticed a small, faded music box sitting on the bed. Toby could faintly hear the carnival music, with laughter and screams drifting through. Toby smiled grimly and left the room, the sound of the carnival music and the children's laughter filling his head, making him feel lighter.
