Alex clears his throat; my guess is he could see the way she looked at him too and it was making him uncomfortable. "Mary jo, why don't you go on home and tell your mama to come down and have a talk to me later, alright. We are gonna find you a job more suited to your.... unique qualifications."
She squeals and wraps her arms around Alex before running out of the building. "You wouldn't want a job, would ya," he kidded?
"Actually, that's not a terrible idea. This is a job I can handle," I admit, knowing that several of the other jobs I've attempted in the past didn't work out so well, like the time I decided to wash cars for a pervert who thought it was best for his girls to wear bikini tops and my boob fell out while I was washing a guy's windshield, giving him and his twelve-year-old son quite a view. His wife was less than thrilled and I believe that carwash was shut down not long after that.
"I was kidding......"
"Why not, you need a secretary and if I don't find something to do soon I'm going to go crazy, it's a win, win."
Alex Just stood there for a moment with that same unreadbale expression that he held a couple days ago when we were in his office. "Alright, you can start immediately or whenever you're ready," he says sounding rather annoyed with himself for even bringing it up.
"I brought," I held the box up to him, not telling him what it was, just assuming he'd understand.
"Umm, ok, cookies," his chuckles cut short when he opens the box, "Sorry, I'll take care of this right away but I'm not going to sugar coat this for you, it's been ten years, which is a long time to gather information on any case, let alone a rape case. The one thing we have in our favor is in this box, but we still have to match any DNA found on these to someone, if there's any retrievable DNA, which is the hard part."
"Yeah, I understand," I say as I lean against the desk the girl was just at. I guess it would be my desk now, since I'm going to work for Alex. "It's personal, so I will do everything in my power to find this SOB," Alex announces again before entering his office, leaving me standing there to figure out what I'm supposed to do, on my own."
The phone rang, making me jump. I picked it up, "Um... Southern Falls police department." The woman on the other end of the line barely let me get it out before she starts ranting about her daughter coming home claiming that the Sheriff was going to find her another job. This was the young girls mother, I assumed, "Just one moment please," I say before putting her on hold and calling Alex, "There's an angry mother on line one, it's that girls mom that you fired."
"Thanks."
I watch the red light on the phone turn green when he picked it up. Before looking around the office just trying to become familiar with my work space. A coffee pot sat in the back corner on a cabinet, complete with a small sink, "Ok, so secretaries make coffee," I said out loud and went to the coffee pot. It was absolutely disgusting; how can anyone drink anything out of this I thought just before tossing it into the trash. The entire counter was filled with coffee stains and coffee grounds. Alright, so I need to make a list, this place need a new coffee pot and some good old fashion elbow grease, maybe some bleach.
I knock lightly on Alex's door. "Come in he says, sounding wore out." I walk in and gasp at the sight of my clothing laying on his desks, sealed tightly in the Ziploc bags that I had placed them in all those years ago. I step back and stumble over a stack of papers on the floor, falling on my ass, still staring at his desk.
Geez what is it with me, they are just clothes, I think and then before I know it my eyes are closed tightly and I'm reciting the words that my psychiatrist told me on the phone repeatedly. "It's evidence, it's evidence, just evidence."
