Chapter 15

I nod, my heart racing as I try to remain calm. Another car stops behind Alex's truck. It's my parents. Alex lets me go and heads back to his truck.

"Mr. Cavanagh," Alex says with a nod as he walks past my dad. I watch my dad nod at him before moving toward me.

"What are you guys doing here?"

"We've come to help with this mess," my mom offers as an explanation before scanning the work ahead of her.

"Well I guess I can show you around, but I try to stay out of the workers way while they are working inside, but they should be heading to lunch soon. Del, Carly and Missy should be arriving when they get off work, so I've been pulling weeds all morning.

"What was Alex doing here?" My dad asks as he steps closer to the cabin.

"He's working my case. I guess he is pulling everyone in that was on the island that night. I don't see how that's possible there were vacationers on the island too but whatever he's the sheriff, he knows what he's doing."

"So, he doesn't have reason to believe that your head contractor is the guy?"

"No dad, he just told me that he's questioning everyone."

"Alright, where do we start?"

Alex's point of view

"What's going on man?" Levi asks his fear dripping off of every syllable as his voice shakes.

"Did you do something wrong, Levi? Did you break the law in anyway at any point in your life?"

"Well, I threatened you."

"If I threw everyone on this island in jail that has thrown a punch or threatened to kick my ass, we'd have a mighty full jail, Levi."

"True," he nods and sits silently until we stop in front of my office.

I turn to look at him, "anything else that you may have done, maybe ten years ago that has been eating away at you that you want to get off your chest?" I ask him to see if I can read anything in his facial expressions.

"Geez, something bad happened on the island ten years ago?" He says now more afraid and clueless than before.

"Come on let's talk about it inside, I'll fill you in on all the details." I say as I jump out of my truck, still being friendly because let's face it, I can't assume that he's done anything wrong. If I did that with every man I interrogate about this, I would destroy all of my friendships in the pursuit of a rapist. Accusing everyone isn't the way to catch the guy, so I tread lightly knowing that if they have nothing to hide they will submit to a DNA test.

Once we are inside the building and Levi sees the place crawling with my brothers friends his face goes white. Levi is a good old boy with a ready fist but even he knows, he's no match for a marine with years of training, except when he's drunk, then he's ten-foot-tall and bullet proof.

Mason smiles at Levi, wrapping his arm around his shoulder before hauling him into the interrogation room, while I watch on the other side of the two-way mirror.

"Man did you really try to get into my brother's girls pants?"

Levi stands, "I was drunk man," his fear evident as his voice raises a few pitches. Mason slaps his hand on Levi's should shoving him back down into the chair before sitting on the table watching him. "I need to ask you a few questions buddy. I need you to think real hard because the night in question was early august ten years ago."

"I can't remember what I had for dinner last night, let alone some shit that went down ten years ago," Levi explains with a nervous chuckle.

Mason grabs his shoulder applying just enough pressure to let him know that he's not playing around. "What did you have for dinner last night, Levi?" When Levi doesn't answer he applies a little more pressure, using the ends of his fingers to dig into his flesh, making him squirm.
