Chapter One

My alarm clock wakes me from my peaceful sleep with its annoying beep. I roll over, groaning, and slap the off button blindly. I would've hit the snooze button, but it was my first day of school, and I didn't want to procrastinate. I finally sit up and stretch, yawning, and look over at my reflection in the mirror on my desk. My hair's a mess and I look I've been dead for six years. I stand up and have just taken a step when I trip on something. I look down. My old, fat grey cat, ridiculously named Hairball, is sleeping in the middle of the floor. I sigh and lean down, scooping him up and putting him on my unmade bed. The cat opens one eye, yawns, scratches his ear and then goes back to sleep. I rub his head a few times, then peek out my bedroom door. The kitchen light is on; Grandma is awake.

I walk with my back slouched to my closet, where I pull out a variety of options- a tie-dye shirt I made last year, a pink crop top, a blue shirt with my old school's logo, etc. I finally settled on a pretty black sweater and some pale blue jeans with rips in the knees. I pulled both on, then reach into the closet and pull out a yellow hoodie. My grandfather bought it for me last year at a street fair. He and my grandmother are my favorite people to ever exist. Ever since my parents left and didn't come back, he and my grandma have been taking care of me. They took me in when I was 13, and here I am now, at age 16, living a life I wouldn't trade for anything. I love the hoodie, not just because it was a gift, but also because it's yellow, my favorite color. Yellow reminds me of sunshine. And when there's sunshine, there's happiness. I pull the hoodie over the sweater, then stroll over to my desk with newfound energy. I brush the lion's mane of hair I have and French braid it, taking time with each crossover. I applied a little bit of makeup- mascara to my eyelashes, a little concealer under my eyes and on my nose, and just a tiny bit of eyeshadow. I work until I'm satisfied with my look and turn to the door, opening it and jogging down the steps with my cat on my heels.

My grandma is making some coffee for herself in the kitchen. The whole house is full of the aroma. She spots me and smiles. "Good morning, Ryan," she says in her sweet voice. "First day of school today! Nervous?"

I shake my head. "No, not really."

"No?" My grandma puts a mug in front of me and pours a bit of coffee into it. "Did you remember it's a new school?"

Then I paused. That's right. My parents took every single thing they owned with them, including the money to pay for my school. My grandparents kept me there for two years, until they could no longer afford it. So they switched me to a closer and a cheaper school.

"Oh, yeah. I forgot," I say after a moment.

My grandma smiles. "You'll be okay?"

"Yeah, I think so." I put my hand on hers and give her a smile.

"Where am I taking Ryan today?" my grandpa says in his deep voice behind me. I laugh and turn around.

"Good morning. It seems you're in a good mood," I told him.

"I sure am." He smiles. "You left your bedroom light on again. And you also forgot this." He holds up my backpack.

"I'm a mess." I take the bag from him and nearly drop it.

"Forgot to mention it's heavy," he says. It was heavy, but I manage to carry it anyway. I threw it over my shoulder and stood up, finishing my drink.

"Let's go. I don't want to be late," I told my grandpa.

"Bye, Ryan. You look very pretty today," my grandma told me, waving as I walked to the door.

"Bye, Grandma, thank you!" I call as I leave the house.

My grandpa and I hop into his old car and drive off, a tiny feeling of anxiety trailing behind. My grandpa was getting directions from the maps on his phone which I was holding, reading off what it said. It's hard to tell an old man directions. I had to be very specific. We had a little trouble, but finally we made it.

The school is huge. Teens are scattered all across campus, nicely dressed and ready for today. Some are chatting, some are wandering, and some are on their phones. My grandpa pulls into a parking space and unlocks the door. "Have a good day, kiddo."

"Thanks. I'll see you after school." I climb out of the car and close the door, waving as the old man pulls out of the spot and drives away.

I was left alone here at this big school. I walk into the school and wander around the hallways, looking for a specific locker- every one has the student's name taped to it. I finally find the one that says my name. The lock is open, so I open the locker. The lock combination is on the door and there are some hooks and shelves. I load my backpack into it and shut it. I sigh and turn around, only to meet two girls about my age. I jumped and put my hand over my heart. "Jesus. What a jumpscare."

"Hey shorty," one of them says. She's got short, wavy blonde hair and a whole lotta makeup on, not to mention it wasn't done very nicely.

I look around and then I look back to them. "Uh, hey." I wave my hand.

"You look lost. Need help?" the other girl says. She's a little darker than the other girl, and her black hair's in a bun. She doesn't have any makeup on, but her pretty green eyes make her stand out. "Maybe you need to find a class?"

"I don't know my classes yet, but it'd be great if you could tell me-"

"We don't help losers." The first girl cuts me off.

I blink a few times, then give her a confused look. "I'm sorry, what?"

"I said, we don't help losers." She snapped her gum and chewed it noisily.

"Well damn, alright. I'll find someone else. Thanks for your cooperation."

"Wow, what an idiot. Won't even stand up for herself." The second girl poked my shoulder. "I think you could use some-"

"Hey!"

A loud voice cuts her off. The hallway grows quiet. The two girls in front of me look around, as did I, trying to find someone who could have said that. I look down one end of the hallway, past a few kids, and see no one, so I look down the other end.

And that's when I see him.
