“Head up Nia,” my dad directed. We were in the middle of the second training session of the day. I had my first one early this morning with just my dad and Jaxson but now the other boys my age from the pack were here. There were about twenty of us all sparing in pairs. The training grounds were behind the Alpha house. It was most convenient for my dad in case there was a pressing issue he had to take care of.

I ducked under a punch, rolling to the right and springing back to my feet. My dad had been on my case all day. I didn’t know if it was because of breaking curfew or the fact that the hunters were close to crossing into our borders.

We were working on fighting in human form because my dad thought it would make us stronger in wolf form. Its how the previous generations were taught and it’s never failed before. Why change a good thing?  I threw my leg out in a kick. It connected and sent Samuel, the boy I was sparing with, to the ground. I jumped on top of him quickly, pinning him to the ground.

“Lucky shot,” Samuel huffed under me. He pushed at my arms and taking the hint, I got up. I offered him my hand to help him up but he knocked it away. “I don’t need your help.”

“No need to be a sore loser,” I said with a bite to my voice. All the guys thought that because I’m a girl that they should win when we fight. It was annoying and rather sexist. I’ve beat half these boys and they all react the same. Like a bunch of babies.

“Enough you two. I think we are done for the day. Tomorrow we will be working as wolves so be here on time,” my dad called. The group dispersed until it was just my dad, Jaxson, and I in the yard.

“Good job with Samuel today,” Jaxson exclaimed patting me on the back. He was always either congratulate me or tell me how horrible I did. “Keep this up and I won’t have to fight the boys off. You’re doing it for me.”

A small growl emitted from my throat. Jaxson took off running with me hot on his heels. Dad watched us in amusement. He told us we needed to act more our ages but I could tell he secretly liked that we weren’t all grown up yet. We were still his kids.

I finally caught Jaxson and jumped on him from behind. He went sprawling on the ground with me on his back. He grunted as his stomach hit, losing the air in his lungs. I hopped up and stared at him.

“Sweet revenge,” I said wiping off the dirt that had gotten on shorts. Jaxson blew a puff of hair, moving his shaggy hair from his eyes. My dad walked until he came to a stop beside me. He took my brother’s hand and pulled him up. He sent me a glare and I just kept the innocent look on my face.

“Are you two ever going to stop being mean to each other?” my dad asked with a chuckle. He knew that we weren’t doing it to hurt each other. Some siblings fight. Others don’t talk at all. We make jokes at each other’s expense. It was just our thing.
