I leaped over fallen trees and dove between bushes, letting my wolf side take control. It doesn’t happen often but when I just give into my animalistic side, it’s a freeing experience. I have been out here in the woods for a little over forty minutes. I had only about twenty minutes left until I told Grant I’d be back. It’s so hard to be running in the woods and have to go back into reality.
The woods were so peaceful at night. Most of the animals were sleeping except for the occasional opossum or raccoon which made it quiet and calm. I could barely make out the night sky through the canopy of the trees. Stars shone brightly and the moon was full. I’ve always heard that a full moon can be an omen of something to come but that was just a silly legend that my history teacher had told me once.
The air was cool and crisp, ruffling up my fur as I came to a stop. My tongue lolled out the side of my mouth as I panted, trying to catch my breath. My ears flicked back and forth, listening to the woods around me.
As I looked around, I didn’t see or hear any movement. It was just me and I liked it. Not having to worry about keeping tabs on anybody. No one to annoy me. Don’t get me wrong, I love living in a pack but once in a while it’s nice to get out on your own.
Well I guess I should head back, I thought with a sigh before turning back towards the pack houses. I walked at a slow pace, not really wanting to go back yet. Jaxson would be sending everyone home and then try to leave me to clean up all the mess. That’s so not going to happen this time, I huffed.
Suddenly a howl pierces the silence. If Jaxson is trying to get me in trouble for curfew again, I might literally kill him. I pick up my pace from a walk to an easy jog but several more howls sounded and the fur on the back of my neck bristle. The howls sounded worried, distressed, and ready for a fight. Something’s wrong. The thought immediately got me moving.
My muscles bunched as I took off in a full sprint. My heart was pumping and I tried to reach out to anybody from the pack in wolf form to see what was going on. All I got back was a jumble of words and quick successions of images. I couldn’t make out much of anything which worried me more. No one could take the time to get out a single thought to me.
I pushed myself harder. My heart felt like it was going to explode out of my chest. I didn’t know what I was going to run into once I escaped the trees but that wasn’t going to stop me. Dad always says that you can’t go into a fight without some type of strategy but Jaxson and him were there and I was going to help them, strategy or not.
