I had studied all my life for this moment, and I was finally here. Matt had convinced me that I should study as hard as possible so I could get in. He had practically begged me. When I had been accepted, he was ecstatic. He had literally picked me up, and spun me around, laughing. Now, I was in the hallways of the Galaxy Garrison, next to my middle school best friend, as we looked at the list of cadets on the wall.
"Awesome! (Y/N) you're our engineer, and I'm the co-pilot!" Matt exclaimed, ruffling my short, brown hair.
"Lucky!" I said, punching him in the arm. "Our pilot is Takashi Shirogane."
"Here," a voice said from behind.
We turned to see a young adult man, probably twenty or so, with jet black hair and a slight tan. He had a good build, strong and courageous, but kind and gentle. He already looked like a born-to-be pilot.
"But you can call me Shiro," he smiled.
"Alright!" I said excitedly, punching my fist in the air.
They laughed at my strange enthusiasm. I felt so small compared to them. Even though Matt was only a year older than me, the fact that he and Shiro were bigger, made me feel somewhat small. I had gotten into the Garrison a year earlier than most people, so because of my age, they were going to get to go to Kerberos, and I would have to stay behind. The way Matt and Shiro would be leaving me made my heart sad, but I knew that they would come back. They had never failed me before. I trusted them. Matt had given me his word after all.
"Well done astro explorers! Well done!" Commander Holt congratulated us as we stepped out of the mission simulator.
Shiro, Matt and I filed out, confident and proud. The simulation was mostly training the guys for Kerberos, but I was going to go into space one day too, so it was good practice for me.
"Exceptional work. Students, you can learn a lot from this bunch," Commander Holt bragged to the group who watched us.
I smiled to myself, happy that I had done good. That had been our last training technique together before the boys were going to be sent to Kerberos. Commander Holt, courteous of my feelings, tried to keep me updated on how I would train while they were away.
"(Y/N), you never cease to amaze me. I wish you could come with us on our mission, but you know the rules," Commander sighed. "But, once we leave, you'll start training as a fighter class pilot."
I smiled sadly as Matt squeezed my shoulder. He knew that I had always wanted to be in fighter class. I looked up at him, and he winked at me reassuringly, giving me his boyish smile.
That night, Matt and I stood in the hallway of the Garrison, dreading goodbye.
"I'm gonna miss you, (nickname)," Matt sighed as he hugged me.
I tried to keep my tears in as I pulled away from him.
"Me too, but, you'll be so busy, that you won't have time to miss me," I sniffed.
The tears started to escape.
"Not true. Even if I am busy, I'll still miss you. You and Pidge will never be off my mind," he said wiping the tears off my cheek with his thumb.
I grasped him in another hug, this time tighter, sniffing again. He let me go, and looked me in the eyes.
"Don't worry about me! Remember, you can always talk to me. And, I'm proud of you too, Miss Fighter Class Pilot!" He said, punching me in the arm.
We laughed. I loved his laugh. It made me so happy inside.
"Oh, I almost forgot," he said, searching through his pocket.
