The next day, Dean drove me to school as usual but something felt different. He was acting different and I couldn't figure out why.
The beginning of the day went by quickly and soon, it was time for lunch. I stopped at my locker to switch my books before heading down the hall to the cafeteria. When I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised to see Mason at our usual lunch table. I was glad that Dean was making more friends, especially guy friends.
I walked over to the hot lunch and bought food before walking through the cafeteria to get to my table. I was the last person to arrive so I sat down between Elle and Mason. They were in the middle of a discussion when I sat down.
"Dude, who is she?" Mason asked as he took a bite of his sandwich.
"Who are we talking about?" I asked as I stuck my fork in the pasta that I had just bought.
"Dean's new girl," Elle said, raising her eyebrows as she giggled. Dean rolled his eyes, looking embarrassed.
"Guys, it's only been a few days," Dean said. "I'm not trying to rush anything, we just met."
"Well you're bringing her tonight, that's definitely a step," Elle said. I was so confused.
"What's going on tonight?" I asked as I took a bite of my meal.
"There's a party at Luke's house tonight and we're going," Elle stated.
"We are? Did we even get invited?" I asked.
"Thanks to us, yes," Mason said. "He's on the team, all the guys were invited."
"On second thought, maybe I should just sit this one out," I said, thinking back to what happened last time with Tyler. If all the guys were going, then I'd definitely run into him.
"Lana, stop thinking," Elle said. "We'll be with you the whole time. He can't go near you."
Mason looked confused and I felt uncomfortable bringing it up in front of him. He could be friends with Tyler for all I know and I don't want to risk getting backstabbed again.
"So, you never answered our question Dean." Mason pointed out. All three of us turned our attention to Dean. "Who is she?"
"She's just this girl I met at the coffee house in town last Sunday," Dean said. "Her name is Emma. She goes to one of the private schools in town and she's our age."
"So, you're bringing her tonight?" I asked as I twirled my fork around in my pasta.
"Yeah... if that's cool with everyone," Dean said slowly. I knew he was talking to everyone but he was staring at me when he said that.
"Totally!" Elle exclaimed. "I want to meet this girl!" Mason agreed.
"Yeah sure," I said, looking down at my food as the bell rang.
Everyone got up and dispersed until it was just Elle and I. I had a free next period so I was just going to head to the library when Elle caught up with me.
"You're so lucky the guys didn't pick up on that," Elle said.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said, walking faster.
"Lana, you were totally jealous!" Elle exclaimed.
"I am not!" I said. "I've sworn off boys, remember."
"Mhm," Elle said. "Suuuure."
She stepped into her class and I kept walking, heading to the library. It wasn't until I got there that I realized I had been holding my breath. I really needed to relax.
