facing feelings

I stayed there on the floor for a while, leaning over with my head in my hands. Soon, my room became dark, so I looked up and over at the clock. 8:30pm

I would've continued to sit there in sorrow if I hadn't heard a knock at my door.

"Who is it?" I asked softly, sniffling.

"Alana, it's me, open up," Noah whispered.

I moved away from the door and leaned my back against the wall next to my closet door.

"It's open," I said softly.

The door slowly opened, shining light into the room from the hallway. Noah walked in and looked around, not noticing me at first until he looked behind the door.

"What's wrong?" Noah said, closing the door. He crouched down beside me and sat down, leaning his back against the wall.

"It's been a rough few days," I admitted softly, refusing to look into his eyes.

"Lana, talk to me. What happened?" Noah pleaded.

I felt bad keeping this from him. He was just trying to help, so I decided to open up to him about it.

"I went to a party on Friday night and I met this girl that Dean was dating," I said. "I didn't like seeing him there with her so I distracted myself and I ended up making out with my friend Mason."

"Mason as in my teammate Mason?" Noah asked and I rolled my eyes.

"Not the time to get all big brother," I warned.

"Fine, but we're coming back to that later," Noah said.

"Dean walked in and saw us making out and stormed off. He looked at me with disgust and I hated it. The next day, I went to a party to try to have some fun and I ended up making out with Mason again, which Tyler interrupted," I said. "Mason told me he didn't have feelings for me."

"So that's why you're upset? You like Mason?" Noah asked.

"No," I said, shaking my head. "It's not Mason that I like."

"So are you finally going to admit that you like Dean?" Noah asked and I felt a tear beginning to form in my eyes. I looked down to try to hide it.

"Yes," I said softly. "But it doesn't matter. I know he doesn't like me back."

"What makes you so sure?" Noah asked.

"We, um, kissed," I said hesitantly.

"You did WHAT," Noah yelled, causing me to cower as I covered my ears.

"Noah please," I begged. "I need brotherly advice right now."

"Fine," Noah said. "But I'm going to say this. You need to stop with this back and forth nonsense. If you like him, tell him, but don't go around with other guys. You don't want to complicate things any further."

"I know," I said softly. "I didn't mean for Mason and I to happen. I let my jealousy get the best of me this weekend. We're only friends and we've made that clear since this happened."

"Well, that's good. But you need to fix things with Dean," Noah advised.

"I don't know how. When we kissed, I felt something and I thought he did too but then he left abruptly and I felt hurt. I realized how much I like him but he doesn't feel the same way," I said, shaking my head.

Noah put his hand on my shoulder, causing me to look up at him. "I think you should talk to him. You never know, he might just surprise you," Noah said with a small smile.

I nodded, knowing what I had to do. I pulled Noah in for a hug, feeling grateful to have such an amazing brother.

Now, on to the scary part: telling Dean about my feelings for him.

Dean's POV

"I can't believe I left," I said to myself, face-palming.

I was sitting in the school parking lot the next day. First period had started twenty minutes ago, but I wasn't in a rush to go inside. I had too much on my mind.

How do I fix things with Lainey? I screwed up last night. I should have told her then how I felt. She kissed me back, so she must feel something for me too.

I need to find her. I need to talk to her and tell her how I feel.

I opened the car door and grabbed my backpack, feeling inspired. I needed to find her. I made my way through the parking lot towards the main entrance and entered the building. I knew I'd see her at lunch so I went to first period.

The day went by slowly and I felt anxious. By the time fourth period had ended, I was feeling nervous but I needed to talk to her.

When the bell rang, I waited around for everyone to leave to buy me some time. I knew she'd be at her locker but I needed the hallway empty. After a few minutes, I made my way out of the classroom and down the hall to her locker. I turned the corner and froze.

About 15 feet away from me, Lainey stood at her locker, her back facing to me. She was in a heated discussion with Tyler, who had his hand on the locker next to her as he leaned against it.

"Come on, babe," Tyler said. "You know you can't resist me. I want you back."

I waited there, hoping to hear her yell in response to his crazy comments, but it didn't come. She stood there quietly, staring at him. What was taking her so long? Why wasn't she yelling?

I couldn't watch. How could she want him back after what he did? I shook my head, disappointed by the fact that she was still in love. I turned on my heels and walked back around the corner. I needed to get out of there.

I stormed down the hallway, trying to find an escape when my phone buzzed. I took it out of my pocket and groaned as I read the message.

Mom: Dean, I need you to come home early, we have company.

Great, just what I needed. I stormed down the hall towards the main entrance. I was so deep in thought that I didn't even notice Mason until I ran right into him.

"Dude, what's up with you?" Mason questioned.

"I'm getting out of this hell hole," I said.

"Is everything okay?" He asked.

"No," I admitted. "I gotta go."

I walked away before he could question me further. I needed to be as far away from here as fast as possible. I kept walking until I reached the main entrance. I left the building and stormed through the parking lot to my car. I got in and quickly pulled out, hitting the gas as I sped out of the parking lot.
