“Being skinny is ok. Not being skinny is ok. Having curves is ok. Not having curves is ok. Bashing someone for their body type is not ok.” “The size of my waist has nothing to do with my worth.” “She’s 'too' curvy, she should lose weight. She’s 'too' thin, she has no curves. No, you’re 'too' judgemental and you need to stop that shit.”I am 99.9% positive that you have experienced body shaming at least one time in your life. It can vary from fat to skinny. You’re too fat, lose some weight. You’re too thin, it’s like the wind can blew you off. I am guilty, I admit that I body shame someone. I’m sure you’ve done it too. It’s not ok. It’s never ok. I will make a promise to lessen and stop body shaming to others. I encourage you to stop as well. Don’t use revenge as an excuse to body shame someone. You don’t know what affect it is to them. You don’t know that just that one word may hurt them. The word fat and skinny are adjective, it shouldn’t be an insult. The cause of this is our current society. We live in a world where the media promotes skinny celebrities. They use it as standard for beauty. Having a tiny waist, round boobs and clear skin is our standard of beauty. Models in magazines are unrealistically thin, they promote dresses, undergarments and other clothes with that body when not everyone can have it. The normal and healthy size are shown as fat. It affects our perspective. Although being overweight is not good for our health, it’s not fair that we show it as ugly in the media. If only they can think of more better way of showing healthy people (that includes every body type) there won’t be bad effect to others. We’ve been told that having this standards will make us pretty. Every corner, every magazine, every social media, you see their gorgeous body, gorgeous features. You admire them, we look up to them. I’m not saying we shouldn’t, we have the freedom for that, but we should know that it doesn’t measure our beauty. Have you heard the word “anorexia”, “bulimia”, or “eating disorder”? That shouldn’t exist. But because of how the media and society, it formed. Anorexia is when someone feel like they are too fat and that makes them ugly. They force themselves to starve, to eat less. There’s a voice inside their heads that tells them they are only allowed to eat certain amount of calories. They measure what they eat and are obsessed at how they weigh. Bulimia is a series of eating and purging. They eat a lot of food and later on go to the bathroom to throw it all up, trying to be skinny. Eating disorder means any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits. Anorexia and bulimia are part of eating disorder. Apart from that, some people do the opposite. Some people turn on to foods to lessen their stress, they eat enormous amount when they feel stressed or anxiety. People with these problems can be helped by seeing a therapist or dietician to help them. In some cases, it can get dangerously close to death. They almost die of severe dehydration and starvation caused by their eating disorder. Statistics show that the majority of people suffering from eating disorder are caused by bullying.
Calling someone fat, ugly, shapeless, thin, skeleton, and other names, whether you mean it jokingly or literally, it’s not right. You are degrading their confidence. You are influencing them that they should feel ugly because they have that body type. Most people suffer from body shaming and sometimes they experience it every day. Try helping them by shutting your mouth and keeping all your judgemental opinions to yourself. Yes, we have freedom of speech, that’s the major barrier of eliminating bullying but we should know that not all of our opinion is needed. You should think before you speak. If you think you’re trying to help someone lose weight or gain weight, you’re not helping them. For those people who are struggling with people’s bad attitude towards your body just be proud of who you are, and not ashamed of how someone else sees you.
