Chapter 8 | close call

"Who's acting weird?" He asked.

"Ryuzaki. It's almost like he's two different people. He... snapped at me when we got into that fight. Sometimes he seems happier than usual. And what's with him zoning out all the time?" Light said.

"He's probably stressed, he is leading the Kira case after all" Matsuda replied.

"What about (y/n), she's covering something up for him?"

"Light I'm sure it's nothing. And if there is something wrong is his business"

Right as those words left his mouth, you walked down the stairs. L following close behind.

"Sorry we're late! I went a bit overboard with breakfast" you said.

Light gave you both a suspicious look and watched you both sit down to work at the desk opposite him. It was silent for a moment while you started up your computers. L leaned into you and lowered his voice.

Light, being the sneaky asshole he is, listened in.

"What are we up to? I haven't done work in a while Ryuzaki has" he whispered.

"Oh, there's a timeline... here I'll send you a copy and that'll fill you in" you whispered back.

What the fuck did that mean? Ryuzaki has been doing work? Of course he has. He is Ryuzaki? Light was confused. What was going on with that emo looking man?

"Ryuzaki?" He said.

He didn't reply, forgetting for a moment that the taskforce only knew of Ryuzaki and not him.

"Ryuzaki?"

"Hm- me? OH! Me... yeah?"

You eyed Light. You didn't trust him, you knew he was up to something.

"Are you ok? You seem... off" Light asked.

You could practically feel the tenseness radiating off the systems body when he said that. You kept a close eye and ear on the exchange.

"I'm... overtired. That's all" L replied.

You knew L didn't do well in these situations. Any kind of confrontation, interrogation, suspicion, was what made him cower back into the headspace. Maybe it was related to his trauma, maybe he was just shy, but he never handled this well.

"Are you sure? You seem very... dissociated lately" Light said.

He probably didn't have a clue that it was DID, but damn the work 'dissociated' coming from him in his context made your skin crawl. What if he was catching on? Light knowing would be dangerous.

"Uh..."

You could tell L was overwhelmed when you started to see the rapid blinking, an effect of dissociation.

"Light drop it, he's fine" you said.

Light gave you both a glare. He wasn't buying it. Especially now that L was starting to dissociate right in front of him. A switch was inevitable, but who would come out? It better not be Deneuve, a child in this situation would be bad.

"Ryuzaki, are you sure?"

L didn't respond, too dissociated.

"Light, drop it" you said, eyeing L who was definitely switching.

Light... his presence seemed to be a trigger...

"What, I'm just worried" Light replied.

"I know you're not. The shit he's going through is none of your business, you're just nosey" you said.

L's body language suddenly shifted and for a moment he looked confused. Someone had switched out. They gave you a confused look, you gave him a look and glanced at Light. He seemed to catch on, the sight of Light making his eyes narrow in anger.

"Ryuzaki, I'm just worried"

The alter fronting stood up, leaning over the table to whisper yell at him.

"Listen here you sack of poorly packaged horse shit-"

Ryuga. Definitely Ryuga.

"I know what you're up to. This is our business. You're not worried, you want details for your own selfish gain, Kira. Don't make me kick you again"

Sitting back down, you lightly nudged him to remind him to sit like Ryuzaki does to not draw suspicion. Which he quickly fixed. Light didn't respond, just sat back down and sighed in defeat. You knew Ryuga wasn't dangerous, just angry. He'd only ever hurt someone in self defence, to protect the system
He held trauma, but was getting better at communicating ams was definitely less aggressive. But that didn't mean he wouldn't put someone in their place. You hoped L was ok in there.

You made sure Light wasn't paying attention, then shuffled closer to Ryuga to whisper to him.

"Ryuga?"

"Yeah, Sorry. I can't stand that man" he replied.

"It's fine, just try to keep calm"

"Got it. But... what are we doing?"

"Case work" you said.

Ryuga looked at the timeline on his screen and looked very confused.

"Yeeahhh, usually L and Ryuzaki do all this. I have no idea what's going on..." He said.

You shook your head, laughing slightly.

"I'll cover you" you replied.

"Thanks, you're an absolute legend (y/n)"
