Raging fires littered the whole island, leaving suburbs and crops ashen and broken - a warning sign of the villains' strength. Civilian homes were no longer safe, and the UA Hero Agency was not big enough to hold a lot of people. So we moved them all to the north-western side of the island where a huge packaging factory stood. It wasn't ideal, but it held everybody inside where it was safe.
With no time to lick our own wounds, we set up rationing stations, handing out portions of food that Sato, Tsu and others cooked up with the many vegetables on the island. Kyoka, Kaminari and Momo had gone off to fix the power plant a while ago with the intentions of getting the island running again. If we could just get a communication out to the main island, we would have some hope of surviving this nightmare.
Iida went to discuss things with the mayor - probably telling him not to worry too much and that we would handle it like we'd done so many times before. But I couldn't help but wonder if we would this time.
Thunder rolled as heavy rain batted down on the tin, factory roof outside, the water only partially subduing the fires that still burned. I released a sigh as I sat back on my haunches, wiping the sweat from my brow. What a miserable way to end what was supposed to be a wonderful day.
"You should rest now, Y/N," Shoto said from his position across the room. A makeshift medical bay had been set up in one of the smaller rooms in the factory, where the injured came to be tended. Shoto sat next to an unconscious man with bandages around his head, filling a hot water bottle with ice to calm down the man's fever. "You look on the verge of passing out."
I shook my head, taking a deep breath before leaning forward again and placing my hands on a dark-skinned lady's stomach. "I'm fine, Sho," I said, but I was unable to even convince myself from how weak my voice sounded. My hands trembled as I closed my eyes, letting my energy connect with the unconscious lady beneath me. A soft white energy glowed around me, but it wasn't as bright; it wasn't as strong, anymore. I was reaching my limit. "There's still so many other people to help."
"You've been doing this for the past few hours, though. Having a break will not kill you."
"Yeah, but it might kill someone else if I don't help them now." I opened my eyes to look at the two figures that laid not too far away from me, two healers from the hospital lying over them. Guilt stabbed my heart at the sickening sight of Bakugou and Midoriya laying battered and bruised side by side, bandages covering their torsos and heads to halt the excessive bleeding.
The others had explained it all to me when my friends and I had returned form the beach: Midoriya and Bakugou had gotten into a fight with one of the villains and lost. Badly.
According to their descriptions, that villain was the head of operation. If he was able to take down both Midoriya and Bakugou - one of which took down one of the villains single-handedly - then he had to be one insanely powerful person.
The villain Bakugou took down now sat chained up in the basement boiler room beneath the factory, refusing to say a word. But even though we had him, it wasn't enough. It didn't quench the anger and guilt I felt for not helping out more. Bakugou had taken down one of the villains' single-handedly; yet none of us could put a scratch on the beast-man ourselves, let alone stop him. And now, not even two meters away, two of my friends laid unconscious and severely injured after giving it their all. What right did I have to rest if I couldn't even help them?
It wasn't until I felt a soft plop on my hand that I realised I was crying. Rivers of tears ran down my cheeks the longer I stared at my unconscious friends; and, try as I might, I couldn't stop them from continuing to fall. I desperately swiped at my eyes and nose, turning my attention back to the lady beneath me. "I've got to keep going," I said, but more to myself than anybody else. "For them..."
