“Now what do you want to do?” I asked Calum as we were pulling out of the parking lot of the book store. It was 7:30 on a Thursday night and I didn't want to drop Calum off yet.
“I’ll do anything you want to do.” I thought for a second then an idea came to me.
“We can go back to my place and have pizza then I can drop you off?” I said it as more of a question, I guess I was testing the waters.
“Ok. I do love pizza.” He said rubbing his stomach making me laugh. “I’m picturing your house having lots of books and weird pictures and lots of candles. Am I right?” I looked over to him and he was looking at me.
“Well… ya you are actually. Am I that easy to figure out?”
“You’re like an open book.” I narrowed my eyes at him and turned back to the road.
“I find that hard to believe.” He shook his head no. “Ok. Try and figure me out then. Figure out if I have any siblings or pets or something.” I turned down the music so I could hear him better.
“I think that you have an older sister, and I don’t think you’re a dog person, I think you have a weird pet like fish or something.”
“That was very wrong. I have a younger sister who is 16 and I love dogs but my mom was allergic so me and my sister got a ferret instead. I hate fish, they gross me out.” He let out a breathy laugh. “Guess more things, this is fun. I’m having fun.”
“Ok I think your favourite colour is red and I think that your middle name is probably really normal and boring like ‘Elizabeth’ and I think that you are more close with you dad then you are to your mom and I also think that you got made fun of in school.” I looked over at him and his eyebrows were raised as if to say ‘Am I right or am I right?’
“Favourite colour is purple, my middle name is Sybil and yes I’m closer to my dad, I’m a daddies girl. And I didn’t get made fun of in school, I just didn't talk to anyone…” Calum started bursting out laughing making me smile.
“You were a loner?”
“I was a loner by choice, I rather read a book then talk to immature little twerps who all they did was just make fun of each other.”
“You didn't have friends all through school?”
“No, just from year 3 to year 6, I was 13 when I had my first sleepover at my first best friends house. It was terrible.” I said making him laugh. “I learnt about boys and makeup and how to do hair. I hated it.”
“You aren't like most girls are you?” I looked at him once more and raised an eyebrow.
“Once when I was 16 I made my sister fracture my nose to get out of going to a party.” We were both laughing now. “Like straight up I told her to punch me in the face and she did.”
“You’re such a loser. Oh my god.”
“What about you? Any siblings?”
“Yea I have a sister who’s 23. Her name’s Mali Koa. She’s pretty cool; she never broke my nose for me though.” I giggled and pushed his arm lightly. I pulled off the highway. “Tell me more about your sister and you. I feel like you have a lot of good stories.”
“This one time when I was 7 and she was 4 I told her we were too poor to get her hair cut and that my mom asked me if I could cut her hair for her so I took her into the bathroom and locked the door and just went for it with a pair of scissors. Her hair was mid-back before I started and when I was done it was up to her ears. I got in so much trouble.”
“You created a full back story just to cut your sisters hair?”
“She’s like really smart.” I pulled off the highway and continued towards my house. “This other time I broke her ankle and clawed at her face so hard that she still has a scar above her eye.”
“Why would you do that to her?” He asked laughing.
“I was sneaking in from a party and I was half way up the stairs when my sister started yelling for my mom and my mom came out of her room and saw me in my little dress and too much makeup for a 16 year old to be wearing and I got grounded for 3 weeks and had to miss this party the guy I liked was throwing so I just made it equal and tripped her down the stairs and she ended up breaking her ankle.” I looked over at him an his jaw was hung open.
“Remind me not to get on your bad side.”
“I’m only like that with her. Which is weird because she’s my best friend.” I got to my apartment and pulled into my parking spot. My apartment was 2 blocks away from the beach so you could see it from my balcony. We walked into the building and past the front desk.
“Oh Ms. Embry, a package came for you today.” The man behind the desk handed me a box.
“Yaay! I think it’s my vinyls.” Calum let out a breathy laugh.
“Of course it is.” I rolled my eyes and thanked the man then went to the elevator.
“Can you press the button for me?” I asked since I was holding a big box. “It’s floor 5.” I watched as Calum clicked the button. Once we got to my floor Calum followed me down the hall to my apartment.”Well, here it is.” I said opening my door revealing my somewhat clean apartment.
“Holy crap you got a nice place!” Calum looked around the room. “Nice art work.” He said looking at the walls. I bought some one of a kind stuff online for the pictures I had in my house.
“Thanks. Do you want a tour?” He nodded his head yes. “Well as you can see this is the living room. Then to your left we have the kitchen and the dining room right there but I use that as my office and down this hall…” I said walking towards the bedrooms. “This is my room.” I opened the door to my room revealing my fairly decent sized room.
“Can I just say this is exactly what I expected your room to look like.” I laughed looking at the fairy lights hanging and the picture frames on my drawers.
“And then this room is the guest room but really it’s just my sisters room for when she comes down here.” The room was white with just a few pictures hanging up in it. I never really went in there so I didn't really care for what it looked like. “And then down here is the bathroom.” I said walking down the hall. “I love my bathroom.” I said opening the door.
“I can see why.” Calum said taking a step in. I had a huge bath and a walk in shower that had an over head shower head and a huge mirror and it was just beautiful. “I bet you have the best baths in that tub.”
“Oh you have no idea.” I said but it came out kind of creepy. “That was weird. Ok lets order pizza!” I said walking back out to my living room. I sat on the couch and Calum sat down beside me; I opened my laptop and ordered the pizza online. When I was done ordering my sister Facetimed me. “Speak of the devil.” I said looking at Calum. “My sister is face timing me.”
“Answer it! I want to meet her.” I nodded my head and then clicked answer. She was sitting in her room with a grey hoodie on and she was eating something like usual.
“Hey bitc- oh you have company.” She said sitting up fast.
“Anna this is Calum, we hung out today and we just ordered pizza.”
“Hi Anna!” Calum said waving.
“Hello. I wish I looked a bit better for this.” She said running a hand through her hair.
“What are you talking about? You look so cute, I want to squeeze your cheeks.” Anna wasn't fat but she wasn't supper skinny either, she still had her baby fat on her face.
“Stop embarrassing me in front of an attractive guy Hailey.” Calum laughed.
“I like you, you’re cool.” I hit his arm.
“You only like her cuz she said you were hot, stop using my sister.” We both laughed. I looked back to Anna. “Anyways what do you want?”
“I’m coming down tomorrow.”
“No you’re not. I have school tomorrow.”
“Well I don’t so I’m coming down in the morning and I can just stay at yours until you get home.” I let out a sigh.
“Fine, when are you going to leave?”
“Sunday night. You’re driving me home and coming here for dinner.”
“Ugh, that’s a two hour drive!”
“Sucks to suck.” She said stuffing chips into her mouth.
“Fine. I’ll see you tomorrow then. Text me when you’re an hour away and I’ll com get you from the train.” She gave me a thumbs up then hung up on me. “Sorry about that.” I said shutting my laptop.
“I like seeing you talk to her. You have a cute little relationship, plus she called me hot.” I rolled my eyes at him and pulled the box I got delivered to me closer.
“Help me open this.” He sat down on the floor and helped me open the box revealing the 10 new vinyls I had bought.
“Who the hell is Norah Jones?” He asked holding one up.
“Oh she has such a good voice. Let me play you a song.” I grabbed it from him and went over to my record player and put it to the song called ‘Come away with me.’ “This song is such a beautiful song.” I sat back down next to him and went through my vinyls.
Come away with me in the night. Come away with me and I will write you a song. Come away with me on a bus.
I sang along quietly.

“This is a really nice song.” Calum said. “Dance with me.” I looked over at him with wide eyes and confusion on my face.
“What?”
“Dance with me.” He stood up and held his hand out to me. I took it willingly and stood up; I was standing so close to him that I could feel his breath on me. He put his hand on my hip and his other was still holding mine; I put my left hand on his shoulder and we started swaying to the music in my living room. “Sing it to me.”
“I want to wake up with the rain falling on a tin roof, while I’m safe there in your arms, so all I ask is for you to come away with me in the night. Come away with me.”
