TWENTY-NINE

A few names later, Mr. Leto said, "Maruca Chebota. Maruca is majoring in pre-med to become a Doctor. She has been accepted into New York University."

The crowd cheered again as Maruca walked across the stage, grabbed her diploma and shook Mr. Leto's hand.

A few more names later, the next person in their friend group was announced:

"Dexter Alvin Dizznee," Mr. Leto said. "Dex is majoring in computer science to become a software engineer. He has been accepted to Columbia University."

The crowd was even louder for Dex as he got his degree and shook Mr. Leto's hand. He quickly made his way back to his seat and sat down, looking relieved.

There were tons of names before they got to Sophie's, but when they got to the H's, Sophie couldn't help but watch Stina.

"Stina Destry Heks," Mr. Leto announced. "Stina is majoring in Veterinary Science to become a Veterinarian. She has been accepted to Pepperdine University."

Sophie smiled. She was glad that Stina was doing what she loved and that she'd be going to a good school.

After a ton more names, they finally reached F.

"Sophie Elizabeth Foster,"

Sophie took a deep breath and stood. As soon as she did, she heard someone yell, "Go Foster!"

She looked out to the crowd of people and saw Keefe, Fitz, Tam, Linh, Wylie, her parents, Dex's parents, Biana's parents, and so many other people cheering for her.

"Sophie is majoring in child development to become a Child Psychologist." Mr. Leto continued. "She has been accepted to Vanderbilt University."

There was another, "Go Foster!" As she walked across the stage.

She grabbed her diploma, shook Mr. Leto's hand and stopped for a picture or two before she finally sat down in her seat.

After a million more names, the last person in their friend group was called.

"Biana Vacker." Mr. Leto said as Biana stood up.

Sophie thought that her cheer section was loud—Biana's sounded like the whole world was rooting for her.

"Biana majoring in acting to become a movie actor. She has been accepted to New York University."

Biana made her way over to grab her degree, shake Mr. Leto's hand, pose for some pictures, and then also blow a kiss out to the crowd.

"And now," Mr. Leto said after everyone's name had been called. "We will announce the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for this year."

Mr. Forkle came onstage and nodded to the crowd. "This year's Valedictorian is Miss Sophie Elizabeth Foster, and our Salutatorian is Mr. Dex Dizznee. Please give them a round of applause."

Sophie and Dex grabbed each other's hands, walking further downstage together as they got their sashes and cords.

"Good luck," Dex whispered to Sophie, squeezing her hands before letting it go.

Sophie nodded and walked up to the podium, letting out a breath as she looked at he diploma she was holding in her hand.

This was what she'd always been waiting for. It was the reason why she'd slaved over her grades and always tried to do her best. After thirteen years of working hard, she'd finally made it. She'd finally gotten the wonderful certificate that she'd always wanted to get.
