When an unexpected visitor comes

"yes there will be something like that. So I will end up coming back after me observing the firefighters so there will be something for the EMTs that will be similar to what is going to happen with the firefighters." I tell him and he nods.

then he said, "shall we go introduced you to the firefighters."

"I think that we should." I say and we leave his office. and we walk out to the common room.

"guys can I have everyone in the meeting room," he said loudly.

then everyone looked at us and then they got up and went into the room right next door. and he shows me the next door over where everyone was. we walked into and everyone looked over to the door where we walked into and as we walked up to the front and stood kinda off to the side of chef Boden. and I Scan the room as we walked in there was faces of confusion and some faces look like they knew who I was.

and then chef Boden started to talk."Hey guys I would like to introduce you to our deputy fire commissioner and EMT field officer in charge Meghan Natalie. for the next month or so, she will be coming in and watching us and teaching new techniques and collecting techniques that are wrong if she sees. She also will be coming out on calls with us and if she sees something that she thinks needs to be corrected she will correct you right then and there also, she will be going over new drills with us. So please do treat her with the most right respect. And if she does correct you on anything take into consideration what you did wrong and try to change what you did wrong. And at some point during this time as she staying with us at this firehouse treat her as with respect, please. And if she is on the scene she does have rights to start barking out orders to you guys if needed to." chef Boden said

then turns towards me and said pointing. "that right there is lieutenant Matt Casey and Lieutenant Kelly Severide." I nod and see that Severide is almost White as a ghost.

and then he told me everyone else named then I say "hi guys thank you for having me and I hope that this was not an inconvenience on any of you. but I do have to say if you do have any questions please do ask them so then you can know a little bit about me and I can learn about you guys." I say to them.

and one girl raised her hand.

"yes, what is your question." I asked

"hi Sylvie Brett I work on ambo 61, I have heard you, first female, to make the highest test score and time in the Academy how do you do it?" she asked me.

I could see some of the other firefighters perk up once they heard that.

I smiled at her and said "well with me I started to think about my career choice when I was young and I always knew I was going to be a firefighter and even though I was always told that I was not going to get anywhere with this career choice because of my gender and because there would not be many women in the career, I knew one day I was going to get through and would do everything to get there. I worked hard studying getting up every morning and start working out from 5 am to 9 am and then do it every day of the week and running and even once I was out of the Academy I still do it every day. I even still do the studying for the test the new firefighters take every year. It's just so I don't fall behind on the new techniques that they are teaching. and same goes with the EMS I study the test material so that do for you new EMS crew, just so I know the new techniques that they teach in the Academy and what they need to be taught once they're out in the field." I say and then I answer she more questions which I didn't mind, "is there any more questions?" I say.

then Lieutenant Severeid raised his hand, and I kinda think it is going to be about my gender and how I made it because he was the one to comment earlier.

"yes lieutenant." I say.

"umm... My question is how did you get to your position that you are in right now because we've only had males in your position we've never had a female." he said with a firm voice.

To be honest, I was kinda taken back from this question. and I looked at him while he asked and I saw lieutenant Casey slap him on his arm and out the corner of my eye I saw chef Boden give him a type of death glare and I saw most of everyone getting uneasy in their seats.

then I spoke "Lieutenant Severide, with my journey to become deputy fire commissioner it was hard for me and it took me a long time to get where I am today. Because of my high academics and high accomplishments in the Academy when I got out of the Academy I was immediately promoted to lieutenant and then I worked as a Lieutenant and after year I was promoted to captain because our firehouse responded to a warehouse fire it ended up being a big fire than what we were normally used to and when our chief gave the command to pull back. I was told that my whole truck company was still inside everyone, so I took the risk and I ran back inside and I'll never forget the day that I fought through that fire burning myself in the process. Just to make sure my fire company was able to come back and work other shifts and get back to their families because I know how it feels to have someone come knocking at your door telling you your Love one didn't make it out of the fire." And I paused and looked at him and he was looking down. then I started again. "And through this whole time I'm still working in the EMS department on the ambulance now and then and then after working two years and in the captain position I was offered the job to work to become deputy district chief and after I worked five years working in that position I was recognized by the ivory tower and that's when I got the job opportunity to work as a deputy fire commissioner and that's how I am here today." I told them.

As I looked around I saw some were looking down at the table of at the floor and the girls on EMS and they just smiled at me like they were looking up to me as I shared my story.

then the chief said. "now that we have asked questions, I would like to tell you guys that she will be starting here next shift. so treat her with respect." he said to everyone and he glared at Severide.

they said 'yes chief' and I nod at them.

he said, "everyone is dismissed". I turn to the chief

"thank you chief for this I know it was an unexpected visit so thank you for your understanding I will see you next shift." I say and shake his hand and then he left.

As I walked out of the room and said goodbye to some of the people who are inside and I head back outside to where the trucks are I see the people at the squad table and some people from the truck doing drills. I stop and walk over to the squad table and making all 5 of them look at me.

then I look at the Lieutenant and say "Lieutenant before I go is there somewhere me and you can chat privately?" I ask him not wanting to make a scene or embarrass him.

he looked up from his cards and said "whatever you have to say to me you can say right here."

"Lieutenant I think it would be best if we chat somewhere privately before I leave." I say a little more with Authority

he looked up at me not moving. and I can see the other boys are uneasy with this so I just say it because I gave him the chance and he didn't take it.

"okay then I gave you the chance to talk somewhere else but it's okay I will say it here, I would like to remind you that if you want to talk about someone behind there back maybe wait till they're out of hearing reach and also it doesn't matter what gender or rank I am here. I walked in here wanting to know how you would treat a civilian if they walked in here. so just know it doesn't matter what gender I am, I am a human being just like you are. and I hope I got the message across to you." I say to him with a firm and with a little bit of authority in my voice.

"yes ma'am you did" he said back to him with a little bit of embarrassment in his voice.

"And I hope next time I walk in here it is indifferent causes. and I hope I see a better you next shift, yah?" I said back to him.

"yes ma'am and again I am sorry for my actions here today." he said

I nod and say "okay then I will see you all next shift." I tell him and I walk off and get into my car and drive off.

little did we know chef Boden was listening in on this conversation.....
