Heredity describes how some traits are passed from parents to their children. The traits are expressed by genes, which are small sections of DNA that are coded for specific traits. Genes are found on chromosomes of which human have two sets of 23- one set from each parent. Most humanoid creatures, like fairies and mermaids, share this quality, however the gene that gives some of those creatures the potential for the use of magic is only found in chromosome pair 9.
Magic and Heredity, that's what the subject was called. Emma's class had already finished the chapter last year, but their science and biology teacher Honey Lemon told them that re-freshing the chapters would not be a luxury if they wanted to Ace their next test. So there she was, laying on her bed on her stomach, legs dangling in the air, hair pushed over her shoulders, pencil twirling in hand with her notebook and biology book spread out in front of her. It wasn't the most challenging chapter they had to learn, but there still was a lot of subject matter to get through.
As discussed in the last chapter, the inherited genes from both the parents may come in different variants, known as alleles, that express different traits. The allele for magic is a Dominant trait, meaning that even if only one of the parents passes on the allele for magic, the child will have the ability to use it. Even so, if and when the child will display their magical abilities varies from person to person. Some may even never use their magic genes at all. Why this happens has never been proven, but there are multiple theories on why this phenomenon is so common in our modern day.
The text book's explanation, or lag there of, stops there as it continues on about the Punnett square for the magic alleles, but remembering something Mss Honey Lemon said in class last year got Emma to flip through her notes from back then. It took her a while to find the specific note, especially since Honey Lemon has the habit of going on and on about the different aspects of subjects she finds especially interesting. So basically everything.
Emma didn't look up from her notebook when the door to her and Aggie's room opened and Aggie walked through, still wearing her coach uniform. Emma greeted her absentmindedly, still scanning the pages, barely recognizing her response that got muffled by the yellow shirt she pulled over her head to change into something more comfortable. Only then did Emma remember why she had gotten back from training later than normal, suppressing a smile the crown princess cleared her throat.
"Good boy?" Emma questioned without looking up, not needing to say any more than those two words.
"Yu heard that!?" The shame and frustration in Aggie's voice made Emma chuckle. "How much did yu hear?"
Emma flipped to the next page, knowing what she was looking for should be somewhere among these scribbles. "Ow, about all I needed to know you're taking a liking to the guy."
A huff came from Aggie's side of the room, "just trying to help the lad."
"You know," Emma started, glancing up to her friend for the first time, "it's okay to admit you'd like to be friends with someone from the Isle."
Aggie had changed into her baggie sweatpants with black tank-top, pulling her arms through her green flannel while she answered. "Ow, yu mean Mal? Or did ya think I didn't see you staring at her multiple times already? What's that all about?"
"Honestly?" Emma started, twirling her pencil in circles, the girl's face going through her mind. "She's giving me this weird feeling..."
"Good or bad?" Aggie questioned with a raised eyebrow.
"Don't know yet..." Emma heard Aggie humming in response, clearly thinking about what she'd just said. "Speaking of the Isle kids," Emma continued while dropping her pencil on her book and jumping off her bed. Emma was about to walk out of the door without saying more but Aggie stopped me.
"What 'bout them? Where yu going?"
"I am going to do my royal duty of playing hostess." Seeing the confused look on her red haired friend's face she elaborated. "I am going to see if our new students need anything." Aggie's mouth formed an O shape realizing what she meant.
"Okay, let's go." Without another word Aggie just walked out of the room, looking back when she noticed Emma didn't immediately followed her. "Come on, Yur Highness, duty calls." Smiling Emma shook her head before locking her arm with Aggie's.
When giving the four their dorms Emma made sure that they had them close to each other so they at least could lean on one another if they needed to, with all the big changes. This did mean that the two young woman had to walk up a few flights of stairs before they reached them. Turning the corner on the third floor they passed a girl in a blue dress, it took Emma a second- and a double take- to realize who it was. "Jane?"
The surprise in her voice made the girl almost jump as she turned to them, regaining her posture once she realized who had addressed her. "Yes, Emma?"
Now standing still Emma took in the girl, more specifically her hair. "Your hair, it looks great. How did you get it to grow so fast?"
A big smile took over Jane's features at the compliment, "Thank you! Mal did it for me with her magic."
"She did?" Aggie questioned with a raised eyebrow. Emma couldn't tell if she was suspicious or impressed, maybe a bit of both.
Jane hummed, "Yes, she's actually kind off nice. She also did Lonnie's hair earlier today."
"That... is nice of her." Emma stated, exchanging a look with Aggie. "Anyway, we need to keep going, but enjoy your day."
"Thank you, you too Emma, Aggie." With a little wave, Jane turned and continued down the stairs they just walked up on.
"The evil fairy's daughter... is playing hairdresser?" Even though it was said as a question, it sounded more as a statement Aggie herself barely believed.
Emma shook her head in slight disbelieve, "it seems like it."
"Is she even aloud to use magic like that?" Aggie asked her friend as they continued to the Dorm room of said person.
Thinking for a second, Emma eventually shook her head. "Umm, there is no law against hair altering magic. So technically yes, she is. Not that anyone really does use magic these days."
"Yeah, okay. But I can't see Fairy Godmother be very happy 'bout it."
They didn't say more on the subject, reaching the door to the room of Mal and Evie. Taking one deep breath to calm the few nerves that show up whenever Emma was about to face one of the four she knocked on the door, Aggie now standing behind her right shoulder.
It took a moment before the door opened and they were greeted by Mal standing in the doorway. "Hey, Mal." Emma greeted her with a smile, only now noticing her three friends from the Isle behind Mal in the room, all of them now too looking at the two Princesses questioningly. Emma cleared her throat before she continued. "I didn't have the time to talk to any of you today. I was just wondering if you had any questions, or needed anything." Trying her best not to focus on how awkward she felt she noticed Carlos sending Aggie a small smile. What was even more noticeable was Dude sitting on the boy's lap, both of them enjoying each other's company.
Mal turned to her friends, getting Carlos to look away from the redhead. "Not that I know of." After all of them shook their heads no, Maleficent's daughter turned back to Emma.
"Okay, alright. Well, if you need anything, just-"
"Oh, wait!" The volume of Mal's voice slightly startled Emma, noticing her reaction Mal corrected herself by lowering the volume of her voice. "Is it true that we all get to go too your coronation?"
"Yeah," Emma answered with a small smile, not expecting that to be her question, "the whole school goes."
Mal's lips formed a smile, "wow. That is beyond exciting." Emma had to admit, that was an... original response, but she shook it off, maybe that tone and almost unblinking staring eyes are normal where they're from. "Do you think that it's a possibility that the four of us could stand in the front row next to the Fairy Godmother, just so we could soak up all the goodness?"
Again, there was something off about the way she said that, and not just the weird slurpy way she sucked in her breath when she said 'all the goodness', but Emma brushed it off. Clasping her hands together in front of her as she answered trying to sound as apologetic as possible, "I wish you could. Up front it's just me and my parents."
"And her boyfriend." Aggie intersected with that ow so helpful peace of information. Emma slowly turned to her, sending her a quick 'what are you doing?' look.
"And your boyfriend?" Mal questioned, repeating Aggie's words.
Quickly Emma turned my attention back to Mal, her hair hitting Aggie's face not entirely by accident in the process, a smile back on Emma's lips. "Yes. If I had one. Which I do not. But if I did have someone they would be at the front as well." There seemed some kind of disappointment in Mal's features. "yeah... I'm sorry."
The purple haired girl quickly changed her expression to one with a smile again. "Okay. Thanks, bye."
Before they knew it, Mal had closed the door in their faces. There was a moment of silence before Emma turned to Aggie, who was already half laughing. "And her boyfriend?" Emma repeated half laughing, already starting their way back to their dorm.
"Yu should've seen your face!" Her friend teased, bumping her shoulder into Emma's. "Don't worry, I know guys are not your style, Em."
Emma's chest instantly tightened, "Aggie!" She hissed at her, eyes shooting around the hallway that was fortunately empty except for them.
Aggie clearly noticed her friend's distress at her blurting that out, but she did not seem fazed at all. "Ugh, calm down, lass. No one heard me." She stretched out her arms as she mentioned around us, "there's no one around to hear me. Even so, would it really be that bad if people knew?"
Emma let out a frustrated sigh, "Aggs."
"Yeah, I know, I know." She interrupted before Emma could say more. "Whenever you're ready."
Relaxing slightly, Emma thanked Aggie, her eyes looking anywhere but her. She know she told her because she trusts her, but sometimes Emma wonder if it had been the right move.
Aggie interrupted Emma's thoughts as she hooked her arm with mine hers again, laying her other hand on Emma's bicep to get her attention. "Yu know I'm just horsing around, right?" The teasing was entirely gone from her voice, the pale blue in her eyes always a little brighter when she looked so serious.
Eventually Emma smiled at her, her muscles relaxing entirely as she let out a deep sigh. "Yeah, I know."
