"Watch your step." Emma warned Mal gently, who nodded, carefully putting her foot back down on the ground. Emma held Mal's hands inside of hers, guiding the young woman who had closed her eyes on her request. Emma had a hard time concentrating as she walked backward, distracted by the feeling of Mal's warm hands in hers. Her hands weren't particularly soft, but they fitted perfectly with hers.
A bright smile overtook Emma's face after she glanced backward. They had arrived at their location. Aggie had helped prepare it that morning, and it looked absolutely perfect. All she could do now was hope that Mal also thought it was perfect enough for her.
"One more step," Emma spoke, nervous butterflies stirring her stomach. Mal stopped walking, feeling Emma halting too, leaning into Emma's touch as she stood behind the Fiary's daughter, softly letting her fingers trail her upper arms. "You ready?"
Mal nodded in response, turning her face into the direction of Emma's voice, not knowing how close that brought their lips together. Blood rushed to Emma's cheeks as the thought of kissing her flashed through her mind. She swallowed and looked forward, knowing that would not be right to do without Mal's consent.
The princess cleared her thoughts before she spoke, "You can open your eyes now."
A soft gasp sounded from the purple haired woman in front of her as she took everything in. The trees opened up to a clearing, sand making place for stones, leading to a lake stretching almost entirely over a creek. the sunlight reflecting on the water, making it almost shimmer too brightly to look at. In the water of the lake, in the shadows of the tall trees, stood a white, round platform. It must have been a dome at some point, but now the only parts still standing were half a circle of pillars, of which three were still whole, holding up a part of what once had been the crown of the building. In the middle of the platform lay a blue blanket, and even from this distance, you could easily see the rush basket and different kinds of food laying on top and around it.
Mal looked back at Emma with a beautiful smile, dazzling Emma as the enchanting soft shimmering light that seemed to embrace the young woman since the moment Emma had looked up at her the day before shone even brighter.
"Go ahead," Emma spoke, softly nudging Mal towards the Enchanted lake. Mal tread carefully, as if the moment she would take her eyes off of the place, or if she moved too suddenly, everything would disappear. Emma's stomach filled with excitement as she watched the young woman make her way down to the water. When Mal reached the more rocky part between the land and the platform, she slowed her pace, clearly struggling to keep her balance on the more unstable ground.
"Are you coming, or what?" Mal called back at Emma after turning around to see the young princess still standing where she had left her.
A bright smile came to Emma's lips, without saying anything, she started her way down the path as well.
Mall turned around again, but as she did, her heel slipped off the rock, a jolt of fear shot through the woman as the ground came closer, but she managed to regain her balance right before she fell. "I'm fine!" Mal blurted out, "I'm good." Only to hear her date starting to laugh from behind her. And it wasn't a short little giggle that Mal had heard from her before either. For the first time, it sounded like Emma's laughter was genuine. It was loud and melodic and ended with a snort. Immediately, Emma covered her mouth and stopped laughing.
"What was that?" Mal asked, her shame for almost falling now gone and replaced by amusement.
"Nothing." Emma, who now was standing right behind her, responded.
Mal couldn't help but laugh, "You snort when you laugh." She pointed out with a teasing undertone.
"No, I don't."
"Yes, you do!" Mal insisted, "It's kinda-"
Emma dropped her hands, lifted her skirt, and started to make her way over the stones, passing Mal by. "More importantly, look at all this food over here. Doesn't it just look delicious?"
Cute, was what Mal was going to say, but she was happy that the princess interrupted her before she could finish the sentence. That would have been really embarrassing.
