"So, how are things, you know, moneywise?" Veronica asked, sensitively.
"Not too good. To make things even worse Eva wants to go on this school trip next year that's gonna cost us a couple hundred bucks and that's just the accommodation and flights. I mean who takes a bunch of 1st graders on an 8 hour flight to Iceland to see the Northern Lights and then claim that it's 'educational'" Betty ranted.
Betty looked up to see Veronica's sympathetic expression.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to put all that on you." Betty sighed.
"Hey, B, that's what I'm here for." Veronica reassured her.
"Hi, may I take your order?" The waitress asked as she approached their table.
"Yes, may I have a large skinny vanilla latte please?" Veronica replied, with a typical Lodge smile.
"And for you?" The lady asked, looking towards Betty.
"Um, just tap water for me. Thanks." Betty replied, feeling her cheeks blush in embarrassment as the waitress walked away.
"Oh, God, Betty, please just let me give you a loan." Veronica pleaded.
"No Veronica! I've already told you a dozen times, that's not happening." She said, firmly.
"What, just because your husband is too stubborn and proud to let other people help him and his family!" Veronica cried.
"It's not just that, V...I don't know if I'd ever be able to pay you back. We are up to our eyeballs in bills, we're just lucky that Jug has grown up knowing how to not get himself into debt but we're scraping the barrel." She sighed.
"That's exactly why you should let me help." She spoke, sternly.
"Veronica, drop it." She said sternly.
Just in time to break the growing tension, their waitress returned with their drinks.
"I'm sorry, okay? I know that I complain to you and then get upset when you offer me money but I don't want you to offer me a solution, I just want you to be there to listen. I'm sorry if that's unfair." Betty apologized.
"No, B, it's not unfair. Fortunately, I've had the pleasure of never having to be in a situation similar to yours so I don't know how you feel. It just kills me to see you this way, especially with Eva, it's just lucky that you don't have anymore kids." Veronica chuckled slightly.
Betty faked a laugh.
"Yeah...lucky." Betty sighed, taking a sip of her water.
"B...?" Veronica dragged out.
Betty looked at Veronica and she couldn't help herself.
"We want more kids. We always have, but we just...we can't afford it." Betty spoke, voice breaking.
"Sorry." Betty huffed. "I'm being stupid."
"No, Betty, you're not. You and your husband had a dream and now you're struggling to reach it. It's okay to feel grief for the life that you wanted." Veronica replied.
"Do you know what the first thing that Jug said to me when Eva was placed on my chest was?" She sighed, smiling gently and wiping a tear.
Veronica smiled at her, allowing her to continue.
"He said 'I want another one.'" She chuckled. "The midwife and the nurses all glared at him but I just remember looking at him as he was crying, looking down at our daughter and I just said 'Me too.'" She breathed.
