Betty was sitting on the carpeted floor of the living room in their family home, blowing raspberries on her daughter's stomach when she heard it. The most beautiful and magical sound she had ever heard. Her baby's laugh. She gasped and her head whipped back up instantly.
"Oh my god, baby you're laughing." She giggled along with Rosie. Betty picks her daughter up and swings her on her hip whilst standing up.
"Juggie, com-" She started, before remembering that he wasn't home, a slight frown fell on her face at the realisation that he had missed one of her firsts. The frown quickly changed into a smile once again as laughter ripples through her daughter's happy mouth again. Betty lifted her daughter above her head before bending her arms to give her a kiss on her still giggling mouth. When her daughter had stopped laughing, Betty felt a wave of sadness go through her again as she heard the silence in the house, other than paw patrol on the tv in the background. Instead of hearing her husband whispering in her ear how their daughter was such a magical creation whilst his arms wrapped around them both, she heard a bunch of cartoon dogs as police officers on the tv instead. She needed him here. She placed her daughter on her playmat again, going to reach for her phone to call him.
"Hey baby! I've missed you. How has your day been?" Jughead asked, excitedly over the phone.
"I've missed you too. Not as good as it could have been..." Betty spoke, sadness laced in her voice.
"Why, honey? What's wrong?" He questioned, concerned.
"You missed it..." She blubbered, tears coming to her eyes.
"Missed it? Missed what?" He asked and Betty could hear him getting frantic, thinking that he had forgotten something.
"Rosie laughed. A real baby laugh and you weren't here." She said, raising her voice slightly. She heard her husband sigh on the other side of the phone and realised that she had no reason to be angry at him, he couldn't have done anything, he was out providing for their family.
"I'm on my way back." He suddenly said.
"Wait, what? No, no, no Jug, you can-" Betty said.
"Betty, I'm on my way now. Tell my baby that daddy's coming, okay?" Jughead interrupted. "I love you both." He ended before hanging up. Betty sighed and walked over to her daughter.
"Daddy's coming, baby, daddy's coming." She murmured sitting back down with Rosie after noticing her getting slightly agitated.
Within 20 minutes, Jughead was rushing through the door and basically sprinting towards the living room. When he reached the playmat, he saw his wife and daughter playing with her favourite toy and his shoulders dropped and his mouth pouted before he sighed.
"I can't believe I missed it." He raised his hand up to rub over his face as Betty picked their daughter up and walked over to him. She rubbed her hand over his hair and scratched the hair on the nape of his neck, causing him to look up to come face to face with his wife and daughter.
"She wants you." Betty said, quietly, looking at her husband's teary eyes. He leant over to take Rosie from Betty and placed her on his hip.
"I'm so sorry I missed it, baby. Please laugh for daddy again." He whispered into Rosie's temple as she fisted her hand in his white t-shirt. Betty looked at her husband in pain. This should have been a happy moment. She understood why he was upset but she thought that he would at least be a little bit happy that their daughter had reached a big milestone. She leant over and kissed his cheek.
"What made her laugh?" He asked, still looking down at his daughter intently.
"I was blowing raspberries on her tummy and it just happened." Betty explained, trying not to rub it in his face. He just nodded and walked her over to her playmat and laid her down before sitting down cross legged in front of her, loosening his tie, undoing a couple of buttons and rolling up his sleeves. He tugged on her feet playfully, a smile growing on his face as he began to run his fingers, pretending to be little legs, all the way up her body before reaching her tummy and pinching gently at her sides. He leaned down and began to blow raspberries on her stomach, causing a little happy smile to spread across her face, but no laugh. After a while, Jughead gave up trying. He sighed and stood up walking straight past Betty and into his office, slamming the door behind him. Betty closed her eyes and huffed before walking over to Rosie.
"Please baby. Please laugh for daddy. He's been waiting for so long to hear that little sound." She traced her finger along her little foot. "I guess the grumpy atmosphere isn't doing much to help, is it?" Betty asked rhetorically. Rosie let out a big yawn after her mother finished talking, so Betty reached forward and pulled her up to rest on her shoulder, walking her to her nursery. "Guess all of that not laughing for daddy has worn you out, huh?" All Betty got in return was Rosie fidgeting into a comfier position for her to sleep in. "You little rascal." She whispered, running her finger over her daughters nose causing her to reach up and try to catch her mother's hand, eyes still closed in her half asleep state. Betty walked out of the room, quietly and made her way back downstairs towards the office, deciding that her husband had had enough time to strop by himself.
She knocked quietly before walking in and shutting the door behind her, baby monitor in hand. She walked over to her husband, who had now completely removed his tie and had undone almost all of his shirt buttons, his head hung back over this desk chair, hands over his face. Betty walked over to the desk, placing the monitor on the desk, getting Jughead's attention. He lifted his head up to look at Betty, moving his hands down to the arm of the chair. She stood in front of him and pushed the chair away from the desk to be closer to the wall. She moved and sat on one of his legs with one arm around his shoulder and the other on his bare chest. She nestled her head in his neck and inhaled the smell that she knew and loved so much.
"You should've been there." She whispered, quietly.
"I know and I'm sorry that I wasn't." He replied. Betty's head whipped out of his neck and she looked at him as if he was crazy.
"What? Jughead, you had no choice in the matter. You have to go to work in order to get money to pay for our life." She spoke, completely dumbfounded.
"I know. I just wished that I had stayed off longer for my paternity leave." He admitted.
"You were miserable, Jughead. You're a work person, it's not like you can help it. I'm happier being home with Rosie because I know that someone is here looking after her but you need to get out of the house and do something." Betty explained.
"I just feel like I'm missing out on so much, Betty. I feel like an awful father and I'm only 3 months in." He sighed, disappointedly.
"Hey, look at me." Betty demanded, pulling his face to look at her with her finger under his chin. "You're an amazing father, Jughead. Please never doubt that. Besides, this is the first of many milestones, she hasn't said her first word, she hasn't crawled or walked yet. You're most likely going to be here for all of those things." She comforted.
"Maybe. But I still missed her first ever milestone. That's a big deal, Betty. I wish there was some sort of way that she could tell us these things before they happened." He spoke, resting his head on his wife's full breasts. He giggled, slightly, causing a smile to break out on Betty's face.
"I'm never going to get used to how big these have got." He chuckled, bouncing his head, playfully.
"Hey, stop!" Betty giggled. "They're sensitive. Besides if you keep doing that, I might leak. I haven't pumped in a while." She spoke. She looked down at him before speaking again. "She's not gonna remember this, Juggie. There are plenty of other things that you are going to be here for. Besides if it's the giggle that you're worried about then you never know, you might be there for any future babies first laugh." She suggested.
"True." He replied, laying his head back down, looking at the baby monitor, where he could see his daughter sleeping peacefully. "She's so beautiful." He whispered. "I still can't believe that we made her. We actually made a human being, Betts. And a beautiful one at that. It's such a strange feeling." He wondered.
"I know, sometimes it still baffles-"
"Betty, shhh, turn up the volume on the monitor." Jughead interrupted. Betty instantly did what her husband said and turned up the volume, only to hear the most precious sound. Her daughter was laughing again, and this time, daddy was here. Betty felt a sigh of relief as she heard her husband let out a sigh mixed with a chuckle of relief. They could see her face, contoured into a laugh as she stayed sleeping.
"She must be having a funny dream." Jughead murmured, still staring intently at the screen in front of him.
"Maybe she's laughing at how silly her daddy was being. Either that or she's laughing at the carnage she caused this afternoon. She's got that type of personality coming through, as much as we hate to admit it." Betty spoke into her husband's hair. Jughead looked up at Betty and kissed her deeply.
"I'm sorry that I was a grumpy asshole. I just hate not being around you two, especially when things like this happen." He explains.
"It's okay. You're out busy making a living for us. You're entitled to be grumpy every now and then." She whispered, leaning back in for another kiss, before both turning back to the screen.
"We did good, didn't we?" Jughead asked.
"We sure did." Betty replied, planting a kiss on Jughead's mop of curls before turning back to look at what her husband was looking at. Their magical creation.
