"I would give anything to see that look on Jughead's face again. I would give anything to make him a father again, to give him another child. I'd love to give Eva a sibling...she asks about it sometimes." She said, running her finger along the rim of her glass.
"But it doesn't matter anyway." Betty spoke, suddenly shaking her head, as if shaking the thought away.
"Instead we have to calculate whether condoms or birth control are more expensive so that we don't get pregnant so that we don't have to pay lots of money to get an abortion to avoid having to pay even more money on a baby that we desperately want." Betty laughed, hysterically.
"B..." Veronica sighed as she scooted her chair closer to her best friends and pulled her into a hug.
"I'm scared, V." She whispered, so quietly that Veronica wasn't sure if she'd imagined it or not.
She replied anyway.
"I know, honey, I know." She whispered as a tear rolled down her cheek.
—————
"Babe? Is that you?" Betty heard as she made her way through their small cosy home.
"Yeah..." She replied, turning around the corner to see her husband in the kitchen, cooking dinner for their daughter as the candle light flickers around the room.
"Mommy!" Eva yelled as she jumped up onto her mothers frame.
"Oof!" Betty chuckled as she lifted her daughter up to rest more firmly against her hip.
"How was your day with Daddy, sweetie?" She asked, gently, kissing her forehead.
"It was so fun, Mommy! We went to the park and then we came home and watched 'Princess and the frog'." She explained, excitedly.
"That sounds like so much fun! I'm so jealous." Betty giggled.
"I'm so lucky, Mom!" She smiled.
Betty felt her eyes get wet at her little girl's words. Even though she had so little, she was always so grateful. She'd spent her day not spending a single nickel and she still had the biggest smile on her face.
"I love you, baby." Betty whispered, placing kisses all over her face as she wriggled to get away.
"Why don't you go get washed up for dinner, darling?" Jughead called over his shoulder as his daughter nodded in reply and scurried off.
"Did the electric break down again?" Betty sighed, talking quietly as she made her way over to her husband.
Jughead nodded, turning around to face his wife as he wrapped his arms around her waist gently.
"Is the heating still okay though?" Betty asked.
"Yeah, that's all good last I checked." He sighed, lowering his forehead to her collarbone.
"Everytime something like this happens it just pushes me more towards getting a regular office job." He mumbled into her shoulder.
"Jug, no!" Betty replied, pushing his shoulders away slightly so that she could see his face.
"I've told you time and time again, no matter how dire our situation gets that you're not going to give up on your dreams." Betty spoke, as she cupped his face with both hands.
"But it's not just us, Betty. We have our baby girl to look after. I want her to have everything that she wants in life." Jughead sighed.
"And she can have all that. If she works for it. I'd much rather see her work towards what she wants then get it handed to her. We don't need to have money to make our daughter happy. You saw her just now, she's so grateful for what she has. You didn't spend a dollar today and she had the best time, Jug." She smiled.
