65. Sasuke Didn't Marry Sakura to Atone for His Crimes

Another perplexing claim fans make about SasuSaku is that Sasuke only married Sakura to atone for his crimes, or out of guilt. I genuinely don't understand the reasoning there and I fail to see how that explanation makes any sense.

Since when has Sasuke ever put up with someone just because he felt obligated to out of guilt? Sasuke doesn't work that way. He's far too stubborn and resistant to commit to an intimate, lifelong relationship with someone he doesn't love.

It doesn't fit with Sasuke's personality for him to have a relationship with someone that he doesn't care about. Sasuke pulls no punches in making it obvious when he doesn't care about someone. After his redemption, he treats others with polite respect, but he pointedly doesn't start friendships with anyone else except for Naruto and Sakura, even though he'd wronged many people. If he were only starting relationships out of guilt, then he would have had to start up relationships not just with Sakura and Naruto, but also Karin, Jugo, Suigetsu, and Kakashi. Sasuke directly attempted to kill Kakashi and Karin, so why wouldn't he feel obligated to marry Karin instead? He'd treated Karin worse than he'd treated Sakura. Yet he notably ignores Team Taka and Kakashi. Why? Because he doesn't care about them, unlike the familial way he loved Naruto and Sakura. There is a reason Sasuke commits to a lifelong relationship with his wife and brother-figure that stretches beyond guilt: he genuinely loves and cares about them (as the series spent a lot of time establishing).

Sasuke might make it up to Sakura in other ways if he felt guilty about how he treated her, but he wouldn't marry her unless he actually loved her.

For those fans who think Sasuke married Sakura only to atone for his crimes, do they really think that leaving Sakura with their daughter for years is making things up to her? Then why does Sasuke act so guilty around Sakura and repeatedly apologize to her? If he's atoning for his crimes by marrying her, then he shouldn't have anything to apologize for if he's "making it up to her" via marriage. So then why does he still feel so guilty about his involvement with her?
