• CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE •| Shoulder to Cry on |
Her door clicked closed with a soft click and Dream watched the door for a moment longer, chest aching. They could make out some of what Y/N had been reading to Tommy.
Technoblade sighed, "I always knew something was wrong with that man."
Dream wanted to snap that his words were insensitive, even if Y/N was not physically in the room but a single look at Technoblade's face said he didn't enjoy the turn of events any more than Dream did.
"What was it about him that gave you that feeling?"
"He got really defensive about me being there," Technoblade paused his chopping, "Considering how close to Y/N I am, if anyone could convince her of anything without her questioning, it was me. So I was an unknown on his game board."
Dream set the pot onto the stove to get the water boiling.
"Could you do me a favour?" Technoblade spoke again.
A favour?
Dream eyed him curiously.
"Go speak to her," he didn't look at Dream, instead focused on cutting up the chicken, "My hands are currently covered in raw chicken and I doubt Y/N needs salmonella on top of everything."
Dream can't help the snort in amusement before sobering, "Okay."
Without giving Technoblade a chance to recount his words, Dream turned away from the counter and wandering to Y/N bedroom door. Before he knocked, Dream pressed his ear to the door to listen out for any noise. He could hear a distinct sniffling.
His chest tightened and with only a moment of hesitation, knocked gently.
"Yes?"
"Y/N, may I come in?"
A beat.
"Okay."
Dream opened the door, opening it not too fast, but also not too slow either, to peer his head inside, "Hey."
He kept his voice even.
Y/n was sat on the edge of her bed, almost curled in on herself, with the books having been discarded on her dresser, "What do you want?" she sighed in defeat.
Dream can't exactly blame her. No doubt she just wanted to be left alone, Dream certainly would after having basically entire years' worth of memories twisted on their head. No doubt she felt a verity of different things.
"I just wanted to check in," he answered and closed the door behind him, "We, uh, we heard some of what you read."
Y/N pressed her lips into a thin line, "I don't know what to feel, or think, really," she began, "After what happened—I shouldn't be so surprised, right? That he had always used people?"
"Sometimes," he hesitated a beat, not having heard what was clearly the more important pieces in those books, and searched for the right words, "We try to remember people at their best, try and forget all the shit they did that actually made them a bad person. You wanted to remember all the good times and maybe he only went crazy after. But the fact is, he just got less good at hiding his true self. He got sloppy because things weren't going his way."
She croaked out a weak chuckle, "I suppose. It's still hard, I want to hate him so much, even before—even before everything that's just come to light, for what he did but I mourn him just as much as the others. Because..."
"Because you didn't want those memories to have been fake," Dream finished and Y/N nodded with a shaky smile.
She took some calming breaths, glancing at the books, "What—what do you know about the Old World? About the Guardians?"Dream paused, "Just the basics, what you learn from school 'n parents. That the Old World's people weren't like us, they only had one life before magic changed that. That it all collapsed because they got into things they shouldn't and the world punished them for it. Why Ocean Monuments and temples exist the way they do."
Because the world was alive just as much as anyone else. The world had been the first living thing that XD had created after all.
Y/N nodded, "They got greedy and didn't know their limits, so the World punished them with the help of the Overworld and Nether Guardians," she looked to her hands, rubbing her fingertips together, "The Guardians are known for the powers to balance their plains of existence. The World can't do it all, not anymore, not when there's been so much evolution. That was why the Guardians were created by my father. But, there have been multiple Guardians over the very, very long time this world has existed."
"Right," Dream nodded, it was mostly called a legend, some called it myth but there was written proof it happened.
"Do you know how that happens, however?"
"No?"
"They die."
Dream stared, perplexed—where was Y/N taking this?
"Cassian was obsessed about the dragons," she breathed, voice barely a whisper as if the whole world would hear. Dream felt a sinking feeling in his chest, he wasn't liking where this was going.
"He wants to become a Guardian, so he needs to kill one to take its power."
No fucking way.
