Happy Endings... - Newt x Reader | Book 3

Newt and I both agreed that we wouldn't tell anyone about our engagement until the Safe Haven was fully set up. We didn't want to rush into a wedding when everything around us was still in construction. So, I hid the ring in the pocket of my jacket for now.

Either way, the whole thing doesn't even feel real. It all just feels so cliché and like it should be in a movie or something. We're just two kids in love. That's all. But something about it just feels so mesmerizing.

The two of us walk over to the dining hall after situating everything, as it is almost time for dinner. I pull Brenda off to the side while Newt goes off and hangs out with Milo and the boys. It feels weird leaving his side, but I know he's safe here.

"Okay," I tell Brenda as I pull her off towards the beach. "Come on. What's up with you and Thomas?"

"W-what," she stammers, completely confused as to where I'm coming from.

"Oh come on, don't play all dumb. I see the way you look at him, Brenda. Besides, you two would be so cute together." I sit down on the sand as she takes a seat beside me.

"Clementine, he just lost Teresa. She was the love of his life, I can't just go in and declare my feelings." She sighs.

"Well... yeah. You have a point. But he needs someone by his side more than ever right now. I'm not saying to just replace that hole Teresa left in his heart and take advantage of his vulnerability right now. I'm just saying, be there for him. He has me and the boys, but you know Thomas. He doesn't like opening up. So be someone he'll open up to. And I'm not trying to rush him into something after everything with Teresa anyways. But all I'm saying is: I see the way he looks at you too."

"Yeah, I guess you're right," she lets out a deep breath. "Changing the topic from me... how are you and Newt? I mean, I know you have to be screaming inside now that he's awake. All that doubt of him even waking up is gone now right?"

I let out a laugh and can't stop myself from smiling. "Yeah... yeah. It all just feels so amazing. I mean, we're all safe and we're here. If you told me that I'd be with Newt, found my brother, and be in a Safe Haven with kids from other mazes four years ago, I wouldn't believe you. But it's all here, and it's happening. It's just so weird because it doesn't even feel real. But I know it is."

"Yeah," she laughs. "I never thought I'd be here either. Hope was always a dangerous thing in my eyes and the fact the Jorge still thought this place existed used to be ridiculous to me. But now here I am, with one of my best friends and all the people I care about."

I look out to the horizon, watching the sun hit the sea. "I'm just so... happy. Like my heart is exploding every two seconds. It just feels so warm and fuzzy."

"You described that perfectly," she smiles.

I sit next to Newt at our table as we all eat. Everyone's just talking and having fun. I finally feel like a kid without worrying about any danger.

Glancing over to Newt's plate, I notice he has one of Fry's classic brownies but I don't. In fact, he has four of them.

"Fry," I peak me head in front of Minho and look over at the boy eating his food. "Why does Newt have your brownies and I don't?"

He pauses, mid-bite, and places his sandwich down before looking at me with a confused face. "I gave each of you two? Both of you should have some."

I hear Newt start snickering from beside me as I slowly turn and glare at the boy. He takes one look at me before laughing even harder.

"Uh oh," Gally mumbles. "You got yourself into a big one, Newt."
