the lesson wasn't as quiet for you as usual, neither were the short breaks in between lessons.
usually the teacher would tell some people in class to shut their chatter but never did he tell you to, today he did though.
Mika, the girl in Oikawa's fan club that you talked to on monday to get some information about him out of her, kept speaking to you while the teacher explained something.
it wasn't unusual for her to get warned to be quiet by the teacher but you didn't want her to hate you so you answered to some of the things she said which made the teacher warn you as well.
you felt conflicted about getting the warning.
yes, it was a warning, but he warned you to be quiet because you were talking with someone in your class which you did not do in the past two years.
not even with this group of girls who you heard talking badly about you in the girl's bathroom shortly after the start of your first year.
and even though you were aware that she only talked to you because you were seen with Oikaws several times since tuesday morning, it felt great to get some positive attention from her.
in between the short breaks some girls, also from Oikawa's fan club, gathered around your desk and pulled you into conversations you were barely able to follow.
one of them even pointed out how you were smiling here and there and another confessed that she thought you were mean by how you always looked so grim.
that gave you a sting to your heart you were barely able to swallow down.
you were happy when the bell finally rung for lunch and you picked Yumi up from her classroom.
"do we go to the cafeteria?" she asked.
"oh. uhm-" you stuttered, unsure if you actually wanted to go.
yesterday you only went because Oikawa dragged you along and you weren't really fond of the loud talking and noises in the cafeteria.
"you know, we don't have to go there if you don't want to.." Yumi said rather carefully but you shook your head.
"no, no it's fine. let's go there" you smiled and together you walked to the cafeteria.
it was strange to you how close you felt to Yumi in such a short fraction of time and you wondered if it was just your lack of socializing the past few years that made you that trusting.
with your tray's of food you and her sat down on the end of a table that was only halfly occupied.
a few girls waved at you while you were walking to the cafeteria and got your tray's.
Yumi noticed.
"I feel like it has something to do with Oikawa that all these girls are so friendly with you despite you telling me you're not popular." she says and takes a bite of her food.
"yes it has" you nod.
"Oikawa has his own fan club of girls in this school" you said and Yumi starts to choke on her bite of food after she processed your words and you quickly opened her water bottle for her to flush down what's stuck in her throat.
"a fan club?" she manages to squeeze out between coughs and you nod.
"he is quiet popular with the girls. well, he is good looking, plays sports and quiet charming so I guess it's only natural" you say and take a bite of your own food.
"so all the girls being so friendly with you are doing so because they think you are close to Oikawa?" Yumi asks, just to clarify and you nod again.
"well, then I am very happy to inform you that I am none of those girls and am glad to be your friend for you alone" she says with a smile and you can feel pride swell in your chest, heat flushing to your cheeks.
you are only hoping that this will not change.
"when did you make that agreement anyways?" Yumi asks and you tell her that you went looking for Oikawa on monday to tell him about your plan.
you tell her how you didn't think he would agree and yet he did with barely any hesitation.
"wow you guys really must hate your brother" Yumi laughs and you chuckle as well.
"I think if you knew him you would too. I mean I love Tobio, he is my brother after all, but he just needs to suffer for at least a bit. Though I think Oikawa and that first year in our school's volleyball club have a little more reason to hate him than me. What's between my brother and I are just siblings shinanigans but from what I know the things between these two and Tobio are a lot more personal. He got the nickname 'king' because he is such a selfish and self centered player, he got stood up by his entire team last year because he was always accusing them of doing mistakes no matter what" you explain and Yumi listens intently.
"well, if I were them I would've probably done the same..." she says and you nod in agreement.
"...or I would've cried. or both, actually" she adds and you laugh a little at her words and the grimace she makes.
"good think i'm bad at sports though!" she suddenly happily exclaims and takes another bite of her food.
you smile and tell her the same thing.
the topic changes and you somehow end up telling her about Miwa and what she does and Yumi tells you that she always wanted siblings but that her parents were never able to give her one because Yumi herself was a miracle to them.
"my dad thinks he must've done something horrible in his past life that he can't have many kids while my mom says it is a gift from the gods that they were able to even have one kid despite our last name." she says and you are just about to say something when someone taps you on the shoulder.
you turn around.
