Jennie is sitting in her living room; A Movie script is spread on the table. She has her phone pressed to her ear as she chats with her mother. The room is quiet except for the sound of her mother's voice on the other end of the line. Jennie listens patiently, a small smile on her face as her mother talks about the family.
But then, the conversation shifts to her younger sister, Ella, and Jennie can hear the frustration in her mother's voice.
"Jennie, your sister has been such a handful lately. I don't know what's gotten into her. She's been acting like such a brat, refusing to listen to anything I say. She threw a fit yesterday because I wouldn't let her go out with her friends on a school night. Can you believe that?" Jennie's Mom sighed heavily.
"Ella? Really? What's going on with her?" Jennie sighed in sympathy, shaking her head.
"It's driving me crazy. I don't know what to do with her anymore." Jennie's Mom said.
Well, Lisa is also driving me crazy.
Ahem.
"Let me talk to her, Mom. I'll see if I can knock some sense into her." Jennie frowned, feeling protective of her mother.
"That would be wonderful, sweetheart. She only listens to you. I swear, I've tried everything." Jennie's Mom sounded relieved.
"Yeah Mom, I will knock some sense"
Jennie replied."Well, if only you could handle your own love life as well as you handle Ella." Jennie's Mom said with a teasing tone.
"My love life? Mom, what are you talking about?" Jennie suddenly tensed, not expecting the topic to change.
"You know exactly what I mean, Jennie. You're not getting any younger, and I want to know if there's anyone special in your life. You never talk about it!" Jennie's Mom lightly, but with genuine curiosity.
Jennie trying to brush it off. "That's because there's nothing to talk about. There's no one, Mom."
Jennie's Mom with a hint of concern. "No one at all? Are you sure? You're such a catch, Jennie. I can't believe there's no one in your life. Do you want me to help? Maybe set you up with someone nice?"
Jennie quickly. "No, no, no, no, Mom, please. There are no setups and no matchmaking. I don't need any of that."
Jennie's Mom gently, not giving up. "But why not? I just want to see you happy, sweetheart. If you're not going to meet anyone on your own, I don't see the harm in giving you a little push."
Jennie. sighed, deciding to be honest. "It's not that, Mom. It's just... there is someone. But it's complicated, and I'm not sure about my feelings."
Jennie's Mom perked up with interest. "Oh? Now this is news! Who is it? Tell me everything!"
I can't, Mom. If you knew that someone was not a man but a woman, I am sure you would be disappointed in me.
"Well... it's someone I've known for a while. We're really close, and recently, something happened that made me realize there might be more to it than just friendship. But I'm not sure how I feel about it." Jennie said.
Jennie's Mom softly, encouragingly. "Jennie, if you feel something, even if it's just a little bit, it's worth exploring. You can't let fear stop you from finding happiness. Relationships are always a bit messy and complicated, but that doesn't mean they're not worth it. There is no rush okay?"
Jennie nodded slowly, feeling a mix of emotions. "I know, Mom. It's just... I don't know if I'm ready to take that step yet."
Jennie's Mom said soothingly, "There's no rush, Jennie. But don't be afraid to take a chance when you're ready. Love is a beautiful thing, and you deserve all the happiness in the world. Just trust your heart, and everything will work out."
