AUTHOR'S POV
Standing at the doorstep of Jennie's house, Lisa felt her heart race a little. She was nervous but also excited—Jennie had talked about her family before, but now, here she was, about to meet them for the first time.
The door swung open, and a teenage girl, about 16, immediately wrapped her arms around Jennie. Lisa couldn’t help but smile, watching the tight hug between the two sisters. Jennie was adored, and Lisa admired the way Jennie held her sister close, a soft, loving expression on her face.
That must be her little sister,
Lisa thought, taking in the sight of the younger girl. Ella had a striking resemblance to Jennie, and the way they interacted made it clear how close they were.
As they broke apart from their hug, Ella’s eyes shifted to Lisa. There was a brief moment of silence, and Lisa felt a bit awkward, unsure of what to do next. She decided to bow slightly, keeping it polite.
"Hi, I’m Lisa. It’s nice to meet you."
"Hi, Ella, it's nice to meet you too," Ella said excitedly.
Ella was more outgoing than Jennie.
"You look handsome", Ella said, checking out Lisa. Jennie slapped Ella's back lightly scolding her.
Ella was Not like Jennie at all.
Lisa was stunned she didn't expect this compliment.
Ella’s eyes flickered between Jennie and Lisa, Jennie gave her sister a playful nudge, breaking the tension.
"Don’t be shy, Lisa. Ella’s cool." Jennie teased to which all of them laughed.
Before the conversation could continue, footsteps sounded from inside the house, and a woman—Jennie’s mother—rushed to the door.
"Jennie!"
she exclaimed, pulling her daughter into a warm, tight embrace, kissing her face like a mother who hadn’t seen her child in forever.Lisa stood there, watching the affection between them, feeling a tug at her chest. The way Mrs. Kim held Jennie so tightly, the way Jennie’s face lit up at the touch of her mother—it was the kind of love Lisa had only ever dreamed of. A mother’s love. Something she had longed for but never truly experienced.
"Mom, you're squishing me!" Jennie laughed, though she didn’t seem to mind one bit.
Lisa stood there, awkwardly shuffling her feet, unsure of what to do next. But she knew it was her turn to introduce herself. She stepped forward, bowing slightly again out of respect.
"Hello, Mrs. Kim. I’m Lisa, Jennie’s friend. It’s nice to meet you."
Mrs. Kim turned her attention to Lisa, and before Lisa could even process what was happening, she felt a pair of arms wrap around her in a warm hug. Lisa’s body stiffened, completely caught off guard.
Wait… she’s hugging me?
It wasn’t a casual hug either. It was warm, firm, and filled with a softness that Lisa had never felt before. For those few seconds, she felt something she hadn’t realized she was missing. It felt… like home.
Frozen in place, Lisa didn’t even know how to react. No one had ever hugged her like that before. Not in a way that made her feel so safe, so loved, even though she was a stranger.
When Mrs. Kim pulled back, she smiled at Lisa warmly.
"It’s lovely to meet you, Lisa. Any friend of Jennie’s is always welcome here."
Lisa managed to mumble a quick "thank you" as she stood there, still processing the brief but powerful moment. The hug had ended, but the warmth lingered, and Lisa found herself feeling… grateful.
