You sat down at a table in the cafeteria, gingerly rubbing your arm, wincing every time the sharp, throbbing pain surged through it. April and Casey slid into the seats across from you, their faces clouded with worry. Casey looked especially guilty, unable to meet your eyes.
“Sorry about that, (Y/N). I really didn’t see you standing there when I threw the basketball,” Casey mumbled, scratching the back of his neck nervously.
“It’s okay, Casey. It’s not your fault,” you replied, trying to smile through the pain, though it didn’t entirely reach your eyes. You appreciated his apology, but your arm still ached, making it hard to feel cheerful.
Gym class had been a complete disaster. Casey, being Casey, had let his temper get the better of him. He’d gotten into a heated argument with the gym teacher over something trivial, all while holding a basketball. In his frustration, he hurled the ball with more force than necessary. It ricocheted off the wall and—you, being unlucky enough to be standing in its path—ended up taking the full hit.
Right on your good arm.
Now it hurt too much to move it properly, which meant your plans for the evening were officially ruined. You had been looking forward to a night of ninjutsu practice, maybe even patrolling with the turtles to stop some Krang bots. But now? You could barely lift your arm, let alone swing a weapon.
With a frustrated sigh, you slumped in your seat. “Guess I’m not practicing my ninjutsu tonight.”
“Oh, don’t let it get to you, (Y/N). It’ll pass soon enough,” April said, trying to reassure you. Then her eyes narrowed with a teasing glint. “Still, I can’t believe you’re the ninja the turtles have been raving about. It’s wild!”
“Yeah, seriously!” Casey exclaimed, leaning forward with excitement. “You’re like the most innocent, quiet teenage girl ever, and then BAM—you turn out to be this hardcore ninja! How did we not know this about you? Why didn’t you tell us?”
You couldn’t help but laugh softly, shaking your head. “Why do you guys always react like this? It’s been almost a week since you found out, and you’re still treating it like it’s breaking news.”
Casey grinned ear to ear, shrugging unapologetically. “Because it makes you a hundred times cooler than you already were! I mean, a ninja? That’s insane!” His excitement got the better of him, and his voice rose loud enough for a few students at nearby tables to glance your way.
April rolled her eyes and swatted the back of his head. “Casey, keep your voice down! We’re in public!”
“Sorry!” Casey whispered, though the grin never left his face.
You chuckled, shaking your head at the pair. “You guys are something else. Let me guess—you both have about a hundred questions, don’t you?”
April nodded eagerly, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Burning questions,” she said with a smirk.
“Of course you do,” you said, rolling your eyes in mock exasperation. “Fine. We’ve got all of lunch. Ask whatever you want, and I’ll try my best to clear things up. Hopefully, this time I can finally put your curiosity to rest.”
April and Casey exchanged excited glances before practically leaning over the table, their eagerness palpable. You smiled, knowing this conversation was going to take some time—but it felt good to share your secret with friends who genuinely cared.
