The streets on this side of the city were quiet, the emptiness giving your small team of three a perfect cover in the shadows. Leonardo took the lead as usual, guiding you and Casey through the second half of your patrol. After the intense fight at the warehouse earlier, the team had decided to split up again to cover more ground. Leo’s team—consisting of you and Casey—would cover the south end of the city, while Raph’s team—Mikey and Donnie—would take the north.
The three of you approached the edge of a building, peering down into a dark alley below. You and Leonardo made soft, graceful landings, but Casey... well, he made a huge racket. He crashed onto the ground with a thud, knocking over several metal garbage cans in the process. You winced at the noise; it made your entire body cringe. Casey was definitely not the sneaky type.
“Casey, can you stop with the noise!” you half-whispered, half-yelled, looking at him in irritation. “You’re gonna blow our cover!”
“Yeah, Casey,” Leo added in a hushed, irritated tone. “You could at least try to blend in and not make the ENTIRE Big Apple hear you!”
Casey straightened himself out, gripping his hockey stick with a shrug. “Sorry, guys. But I’m not as stealthy as you two.”
You slapped your forehead in annoyance and glanced at Leonardo. “Why did we bring him with us?”
“I have no idea,” Leo said, a laugh escaping as he rubbed the back of his head.
You chuckled along with him, catching a glimpse of Casey pouting behind them.
“Alright! I’ll try to be quiet!” Casey yelled, a little too loudly. You and Leo shushed him again before continuing the mission.
The group advanced toward a more populated street, with shops lining the sidewalks and people scattered around. You all made your way up to the rooftops once more for a better vantage point. You scanned the street below with sharp eyes, searching for anything out of the ordinary.
“Looks like this area is clear...” Casey said, easing up from his sneaky posture.
Then, you saw it.
“Wait!” you exclaimed, pointing toward a group of teens hanging out casually. Leo and Casey squinted, trying to make sense of what you were seeing.
Casey didn’t seem to pick up on anything unusual, but Leo’s eyes narrowed as he spotted it too.
“That one!” Leo said, his finger pointing toward one of the boys in the group. You both looked more carefully, and sure enough, the boy’s backpack was glowing—green, unmistakably.
“Mutagen!” you confirmed with certainty, your pulse quickening.
Casey finally caught up, confused. “What’s a can of ooze doing in some kid’s backpack?”
“Guess it’s our job to find out,” Leo said, his tone firm. “Follow me.”
The three of you cautiously moved closer to the group, blending into the shadows as best as you could. The teenage boys seemed like regular, rowdy kids, nothing too suspicious about them... except for the glowing mutagen in one of their bags.
“Okay, Leo, what’s the plan?” you asked, tightening your mask around your face.
“If we can get that mutagen, Donnie might be able to use it,” Leo explained, scanning the group carefully. “Mutagen’s becoming harder to come by now with the Krang trying to get their hands on it.”
“Right,” you nodded, glancing at Casey, who added, “Plus, if we get it before the Krang do, we might have a little advantage.”
Leo considered that for a moment before speaking again. “We need to get it without being seen. We’ll need a distraction somehow.”
