Surely it wasn't much of a smart move to just randomly look at an old Cybertronian item and just let recruits all in on the action.

It wasn't smart but Ratchet unfortunately admitted that he was trying to be a bit less harsh as he had been before. He didn't want to be as he was before because part of him kept a long grudge for his own stupidity, his priorities were never really about fun. he practically grew up too fast, trying to care for Blades, and putting literally everyone else before his own feelings, which is what made him so upset for the longest time. It all left no room for him to have something for himself.

Since the war is over, he finally found a chance to take a moment for himself, but figuring out what made him at peace took awhile. he didn't really know at first but then when Heatwave suggested maybe taking some time at the academy, Ratchet slowly began to understand what he was missing.

He knows he loosened up too much back at that point with the recruits but he knows that is the most happy moment he has been in forever, something for himself. surely he has lost much time but he was slowly easing into a calm life where he could finally put himself first for once. It was a bit weird, but he was healing, recovering little by little.
