The Interruption

The book sat open on the kitchen table. Some photographs lay in between us, taken out of their page and some others sat between Lestats fingers as he looked from them to me.

He had been staring at one of the oldest paintings in the book. It was a small painting of me as a child.

"Do you want a baby? Is that why you have this book- i can get us a baby, my love, i just had no idea you desired one-"

I sighed "I do not want a baby, love- why does everyone assume i desire a child- i simply would like to visit my family someday, that's why i have the book"

I had decided to talk to Lestat about my findings only a few hours after the young one found my book.

Claudia was young and... forgetful, so i did not want her accidentally saying something which could erupt into an argument with Lestat.

I had not told anyone that i had found my family, nor did they know i had acquired a family picture album, and i did not want to take the risk of Lestat holding a grudge that i kept that information from him.

I knew why i did it- kept the album hidden for weeks- but I wasn't even entirely sure I wanted to admit it to myself.

I felt like my family- my life before Lestat- was sacred. It felt like it only lasted a millisecond...I felt it precious and personal, even too personal to give my fiancé knowledge of me finding the book holding the last bits of my previous life...and a small part of me was still worried he would take them from me again, even if he never intended to take my family away in the first place.

"I understand" Lestat said

My head snapped to his as his words bring my mind back into the room.

We were in the Kitchen. A place we had been frequenting more and more in recent times. We would just sit and chat and most the time the rest of our family would end up filing in, one by one, as they heard us or passed by the door until we were chatting and playing board games- the four of us. It made me feel like we were normal... at least for a few hours until Lestat would beat Louis at dominos, as he often did, and Louis would storm off with Claudia trailing behind him.

"You... understand?" I asked, not believing his words

"I understand- you want to visit your family... and if that's what you want then we will visit them by the end of the week" He said in triumph as he stood from the table "We will have to travel at night however, so that could be a challenge-"

"Lestat-"

"But I'm sure we can hire rooms above bars and sleep during the day-"

"Lestat-"

"Wait, I haven't asked, stupid me- where is your family located-"

"Lestat!" I said firmly. He stopped his pacing and turned his attention towards me "Lestat you can't come with me"

It was quiet in the room. You could have heard blood slowly drip from the table and begin to pool on the floor- you could have heard my heart beating rapidly in antici-

-pation at how Lestat was going to react to my words- if i was human that was

"Do you... do you not want me to meet your family?" He asked

His little slip up, his little hesitation, it told me all i needed to know.

Lestat was genuinely concerned that i thought my family would not approve of him.

I sighed as i smiled softly at him.

I stood as i gently placed my hand on his forearm

"My love, it is not that. I want you to meet them, however i don't plan on visiting them any time soon. I wasn't even going to show you the book yet... i wanted to give my plan more time before i informed you, my love"

I sighed as I turned away from him.

Suddenly lestat turned my face to his.

There was no anger in his eyes, no hatred, nothing ugly... instead he nodded at me

"I understand" He said "I have pulled you from them once before so i will be here, waiting, until you decide you need me to help you get them back." He said "You said you have a plan... i believe you- i will not take you away from them again"

I looked at him as my eyes lit up.

"I do. I do have a plan, my love, and if all goes well we will be meeting them soon" I started "I have been sending them letters- when I visited my old family home, back when we were in New York, i found the book" I said as i gestured to it on the table behind us "It held portraits and recent photos of my family and an address was scribbled onto the back of one- turns out my uncles half of the family moved to Germany and have been living there since the start of the 1800s. "

I smiled

"I can see my relatives again" I breathed "I'm sort of friends with my great niece... or would it be great great niece, I'm not sure" I muttered "And we will visit them, but right now if we showed up looking as young as we do they would not believe i am related to them, as far as they know I'm a distant cousin in her mid fifties"

"Well i have always said you write so old fashioned-"

I laughed as i playfully hit Lestat

"No.. I'm happy for you i suppose" He said "I know how much family means to you... i just can not relate"

I smiled a bittersweet smile, remembering how he had explained to me about his

"But if this is how you want to deal with your vampirism then that is up to you" he said "Darling, you can do anything if you put your mind to it, even convince someone you are in your fifties when you look in your late twenties-"

I went to laugh... went being the keyword, but i never got to let out that laugh... my ability to find humour when talking about my family left me the moment a knock sounded at the door.

And the knock didn't sound like Louis or Claudia... the knock didn't sound at all familiar.
