Shannon's POV:

20 years ago, I lost Shelly.

No, we all lost everything 20 years ago. Millions of people were murdered or turned into twisted, huge cities were bombed to prevent the ichor from spreading, and the day humanity fell apart completely. 20 years and nothing has changed for the better. We have no cure, no lead, no nothing. All we have is broken pieces of what used to be law.

The world had to adjust a lot. Quarantines are what we called them when humans found shelter from the unforgiving wild. They're run by a system named FEDRA, a military if you will. FEDRA was the reason huge cities were bombed, and I don't at all side with them, but I'd rather stay with them then the Fireflies. 

A group of reckless rebels, and although revolting against FEDRA sounded lovely, the leader of the Fireflies were Deliliah and Arthur. I don't exactly trust them after the ichor corruption; it's their fault this started after all. Of course, the public doesn't know this besides the ones who were there.

Which most of them are dead. 

I haven't seen a toon in 20 years. Not even a corrupted, so it's safe to assume they're wandering somewhere else or someone already killed it. Just the thought of Gardenview brought back painful memories. I couldn't even remember the names of all the toons.... only Shelly. I remember her laughter, her dinosaur facts, her love for digging fossils, her insecurities, her cries, her screams of terror, the bullet in her stomach that I couldn't get out as she died. I remembered everything. She was like my daughter after all. 

It didn't stop at Shelly; the world took everything I've ever loved. Austin was gone too. Well, I don't know if he's dead or not, I just haven't seen him in 10 years. The reason we split is because he joined the Fireflies to give Deliliah and Arthur a second chance. That's when we split, because there was no way in hell I'd be joining them. Recently, I managed to catch a Firefly attempted to kill me in a Quarantine and asked them questions about what was going on. They mentioned that one of their best fighters had quit, and I knew it was Austin right away. 

So now, he's out in God knows where, but the Firefly mentioned that they last saw him in Wyoming. I live in Boston, by the way. It's far. So, Austin was cooked, and I wanted to leave him to die to teach him a lesson about the Fireflies, but I couldn't just do that. Austin was one of the only ones I had left. 

I had Veronica too. 

We started dating during the pandemic, and she's stuck with me since. We live together in the Boston Quarantine and smuggle drugs for money.... it's not so great, but whatever gets us money in this crazy world that was destroyed. You were either FEDRA or Fireflies. Of course, there were towns in between but most of them were doomed. I had very little care for what's left of this broken place, I really only stayed for Veronica, and a chance to see Austin again. 

I was wrapping my bruised hand in a bandage; I've trained quite well and gotten out of that uniform I used to wear back when I worked in Gardenview. That did mean I was a little more reckless, but also a lot stronger. Veronica opened the door with a huge swing, which caught my attention.

"Hey," I started as I walked to her. I tried pushed away the short black hair from her eyes, it normally didn't cover that much, but she hissed when I tried.
