The Maze (Newt X Reader) Book 1 - complete

Yesterday when the maze doors were closing, Ben was banished. I couldn't bear to stand there and watch, neither could Chuck. So we sat in the homestead until it was over. I tried to get Thomas to come with us, but he didn't. He said he felt like it was his fault, so he felt like he had to watch. I wish he didn't, but I can't change that now. Today me and Minho are going to look for Ben together when we run. Alby wanted to go with us, but we talked him out of it. He needs to be safe in the glade.

Newt woke me up at 5:30 this morning and I did my usual routine and put on some comfy running clothes that the creators sent up with Tommy: black sports bra, thin strapped loose white tank top, some loose black shorts that were a little above mid-thigh, and my new white running shoes. I'm so glad I don't have to run in boots anymore.

I head over to Frypan to get some breakfast. "Mornin' Fry."
"Mornin' girlie."
"What do ya have for me? I'm starving."
"Bacon and an apple." He says handing me the plate.
"Awesome! Thanks Fry."
I find Newt and sit next to him. "Hey Newtie." I say as I sit down and give him a kiss on the cheek
"Hey love, did you sleep well last night?"
"Yup, did you?"
"As good as I'll ever sleep in this place."
I nodded my head and continued eating my breakfast. I noticed Minho isn't here like he usually is. "Where's Min at?" I ask Newt.
"He got his breakfast and headed to the map room. Why? You want him to be here or somethin'?" He replied, slightly angry at the end.
"No, he just usually sits here so that's why I asked. Why so moody?"
"I'm not moody, I just asked a simple bloody question."

I didn't reply after that. 'That was really weird, I wonder what's wrong with him?' I thought to myself. I was about done with my breakfast when Newt spoke up, "You have to go to the map room and get ready, I'll wait for you by the doors."
Okay, once again, weird. I just brush it off and head to the map room, he'll probably be in a better mood when I get back from running.

I walk in the map room and see Minho studying the model of the maze. "Hey Min." I say.
He looks up at me and smiles, "Hey shortcake."
"I'm not that short!"
"Compared to me, yes you are."
"Oh whatever, do you have any idea where he could've gone?"
"I have an idea, we'll just have to check it out and see. And here, I packed your bag for you."
"Thanks Min, c'mon the doors are about to open."
We grab our bags and jog to the doors. Newt was standing by the doors waiting for me like usual. I jog up to him and immediately wrap my arms around his neck, he rests his hands on my hips and kisses me. He lets go of my hips and puts both his hands on my cheeks, "I'm sorry for the way I acted at breakfast, I guess I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Forgive me?" Newt said looking at my eyes the entire time.
"Everybody has off days where they're just in a bad mood. It's fine, I forgive you. It's not like you did anything really bad anyway." I smile and give him one last kiss before I have to go.

The ground shakes and the doors start to open. He tells me to be safe and come back to him, and I tell him I will and I'll see him at dinner. I go stand by Minho. When the doors fully open he nudges my arm and I say, "Let's go shank." Before we run off into the maze and start our search.

We head to section 5, because that was the section that was open last night. We run the entire section, searching every inch of it, and finally after a while we find a ripped up shirt indicating that Ben is dead. "Looks like the griever dragged him here." Minho said examining the ripped piece of clothing.
"Looks that way, there's no way someone could've survived that." I say sadly.
"I know... Let's just go run section 4, then we'll take a break."
We run all of section 4 then sit down to eat lunch. For some reason there was a lot of tension in the air, and out of the corner of my eye I could see Minho staring at me. I finished my lunch and turned to face him, "What's up with you?" I asked him.
"Huh?" He said.
"Why are you staring at me and acting strange?"
"Oh... Um... I-I'm n-not... Am I? *sighs* okay look, I've had a crush on you for a while now."
"Minho you know I'm with Newt... I just don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything, just listen. I know I can't remember any other girls, but I bet you are the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. Everything about you is perfect to me. And I know that you're with Newt, but I know that you feel something for me." He places his hand on my racing heart. "See? I make you nervous." He whispers in my ear. "Just give me a chance to make you happy."

Why is my heart about to beat out of my chest? I can't like Minho! I love Newt! "Minho..." I whisper. He doesn't say anything back, he just kisses me. Wait, KISSES ME!? I push Minho away and stand up. "What the hell Min?! You know I'm with Newt! I don't care if you did just admit your feelings for me, I'm not a cheater and you don't just kiss a girl who has a boyfriend."
"Well your heart was racing the entire time, and you did kiss me back."
"Yeah, only cause I didn't realize what was going on yet. Anyway, we need to start heading back."
"Fine." He gets up and looks at his watch. "Shit! We only have 5 minutes until the doors close!" My eyes widen and we start running full speed to try and make it.

Just one more corner and we can sprint to the glade. Then the ground starts shaking and we heard rumbling. "No!" I yelled. "Come on run faster!" Minho yelled. We turn the corner and see the doors halfway closed and the gladers standing on the other side yelling at us to go faster; Tommy, Newt, and Chuck were in the front. This is a very long corridor, I'm running as fast as I can, and when I look up to see the doors nearly closed... I realized that we're not gonna make it. I slow to a stop and sit down on the floor leaned up against the wall, Minho stops as well and drops to his knees.

We had given up.

Everyone was yelling at us to get back up, except Newt. He just stared at me with tears in his eyes, which made me tear up. When the doors were almost closed a single tear fell from his eyes and he mouthed 'I love you' before the doors slammed shut. That's when my tears started to fall, and Minho even looked like he was gonna cry. "Get up (Y/N), we gotta at least try to survive." Reluctantly, I get up and walk over to Minho. He wraps an arm around my shoulder, and we start to walk through the maze. God I hope we survive...
