I almost typed the Drake Side of the Moon. There is something very very wrong with me. I've learned to not question it. Just go with the flow.
The girls were sheltering at Cleo's house for the night. Or at least, they were planning to. Unfortunately, Cleo hadn't been able to get the house to herself. So while Kim was gone with a friend, Mr. Sertori was unfortunately still there, making it ten times more important for the moon to stay tame.
Cleo and Rikki were upstairs building a fortress of pillows to stay the night in, while Emma was in the kitchen grabbing snacks and chatting politely with Don, who was rambling on and on about the fishing business.
"And wha la! The fortress of mermaid solitude!" Rikki proudly announced.
Cleo giggled. "Poor Emma, she's stuck downstairs probably listening to my dad talk about fishing or something."
"Yeah, I don't envy her. But I hope she gets up here with the snacks already. I'm starving." complained Rikki.
Just then, Emma burst in the door with colorful little snack bags bundled in her hands. With relief she dropped them on the carpet and fell back against the door. "Please tell me I got away safely."
Rikki and Cleo glance sideways at each other, before bursting out laughing.
"What?" Emma said, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I don't think I could have taken any more of it!"
Once the two had calmed down, they began preparations for the night ahead.
In true Emma form, the blonde organized the movement like a general in front of her army. Of course, her authoritarian ways led to some conflict with Rikki. The confrontations usually ended with the fiery tempered Rikki mock saluting Emma, and then causing a bit of mayhem behind her back.
"And finished." Emma noted with relief as she taped the last of the windows shut. "Nothing should be getting through this."
"Great." Rikki said sarcastically. "Now let our long night of anxiety begin."
It was half-past eleven when Cleo heard a noise. It was coming from outside, and was just the quiet tapping of a stray foot, but Cleo was curious.
She silently got out of bed and tiptoed around the two sleeping girls at her feet, until she reached her door and sneaked down the hallway. She began to hear a man singing softly as she approached the back deck.
She hesitated at the doorknob, knowing that she shouldn't open it, but still wanting to. She could feel the moon clawing at her from where she stood. Cleo could feel it trying to entice her to go outside.
With enormous difficulty, she turned away from the door and began to pad her way back toward the stairs. But she was too late.
"Cleo?"
She spun around, shocked at the voice behind her. It was her dad, standing surprised in the doorway.
He started to ask questions, but all Cleo heard was a soft murmur, a noise hidden in the back of her head. Because right before her, in all its glory, was the pale moon. She stared at it for what seemed to be all eternity, before giving a small smile and turning to face her father.
"Cleo are you all right?" Don asked worried at his daughters vacant expression.
Cleo seemed to shake out of it and say, "Yeah dad. I'm fine. I just wanted to see the moon." She then headed upstairs without any further explanation to go get Emma and Rikki.
There was still a long night ahead.
