So, 11 chapters. This is officially my longest story ever. Really, it's my only story since I kind of gave up on the others. Happy 11th to me!

Emma climbed out her window, a small backpack resting on her shoulders. She froze the roof slightly, and gently slid down the thin ice. With a small thump, she landed in the gutter.

Walking as lightly as possible, she found the spot where the gutter was closest to the ground, and jumped. She carefully rolled as she landed. It wouldn't do to wake her parents up.

Careful not to jingle them, Emma took out her dad's car keys from her pocket, and unlocked the car. She winced as it beeped slightly, but there was no sound of movement from the house. Opening the car door, she twisted the keys in the ignition and took a deep breath.

"Right then. Let's do this."

She pulled out of the driveway.

Cleo quietly packed a backpack full of waterproof bags of essentials. All her savings were in the  bags, as well as a few personal possessions and photos.

Her dad had been trying to peek in to check on her ever since she went up to bed. He didn't trust her not to do something stupid.

Cleo glanced nervously at her watch, then breathed a sigh of relief. Her dad wouldn't be back for roughly another half-hour. Hopefully Emma would be here by then.

She went and pulled the curtains aside and looked outside for the millionth time. To her surprise, Mr. Gilbert's red station wagon was parked outside, with Emma at the wheel.

Not wanting to risk the hallway, she climbed out the window, and landed in the gutter. Cleo swung herself over the gutters edge and hung there briefly, before dropping down noiselessly. She got up, and ran to Emma's car, sliding into the passenger seat.

"Now for Rikki." Cleo said, determined.

Well damn.

Rikki, like the other girls, had tried to climb out her window. She had done it dozens of times before; why wasn't it working now? Oh, right. She's pregnant.

That pretty much scrapped the plan. There was no way Rikki could go out the front door without waking her dad and ruining the whole scheme.

Not having much of a choice, Rikki quietly opened her bedroom door, and crept along the crowded hallway. She was careful in front of her dad's door, which was known to have a few creaky floorboards, but managed to get out safely.

At least, that's what she thought. She didn't realize her mistake until she was already on the back porch, where her dad was sitting gazing at the stars.

Rikki froze too late. Her dad had already heard the creak, and turned around.

"Rikki? What are you doing up so late?" He frowned.

Her expression must have given her away, because Terry's scowl became even deeper.

"Rikki, what is going on?!"

To her great surprise, Rikki was lost for words. She spluttered slightly, before turning on her heel and sprinting away. Rikki heard her dad's shout behind her, but didn't stop.

Emma and Cleo were a block from Rikki's house, when they heard a shout.

"Emma! Cleo!"

Cleo gasped, "It's Rikki!"

Emma stopped the car long enough for Rikki to hop in the backseat, and then did a sharp u-turn and sped away.

The trio arrived at the boatyard a few minutes later. They parked Mr. Gilbert's car alongside the dock, and got out.

Emma looked at Cleo. "You have the keys?"

Cleo nodded, holding up the keys she had nipped from her dad earlier that night.

"Great, now let's go." Rikki said anxiously. She kept glancing over her shoulder every few seconds, as if she expected someone to be there.

Emma and Cleo exchanged worried looks.

"Rikki, did something go wrong?" Cleo asked.

Rikki sighed. "Yeah. My dad caught me on the way out. So we really need to hurry before he calls the police or something."

"Then we'd better go." Cleo said.

The girls raced down the dock, their backpacks bouncing up and down on their backs, as they ran to Mr. Sertori's boat.

The teens quickly dropped their bags on the floor. Cleo pulled out the keys she had swiped, and started the ignition. All three of them flinched as the boat gave a large rumble. With their luck, they'd be caught before they were out of the harbor.

With Rikki at the wheel, the boat was set on course for New Zealand. Emma was putting up the sails so that Cleo could propel them forward with the wind.

After a few hours, the girls saw the sun peek above the horizon. It was one of the most beautiful things they had ever seen, tendrils of red, seeming to try to claw the sun into the ever lightening sky. And then the sphere of fire that the vines dragged behind it; the sun.

The mermaids stared slack-jawed at the heavens, feeling the sun entering their hearts and giving them strength.

The exhausted girls somehow found it in them to make it to New Zealand. They beached the boat, and grabbed their luggage.

"Sleep...." groaned Rikki.

"Yes please." Cleo said, her eyes drooping.

Emma reprimanded them. "We can't sleep yet. The police are going to be after us remember? We need to get to Mako before they track the boat down."

Sighing, the mermaids dove into the water.
