I simply could not believe what I was hearing. "It's a month long project, so get used to seeing me with your boyfriend." Kylie wrapped her arm around Tyler and he struggled to get away.
"Anyway, the teacher paired you with Gaige Gallagher. She said that you need to work together on it even though you aren't at school. I got his number so you should probably call him to set up times to work."
"Thanks, babe. As for you," I turned to Kylie, "don't think I won't break another one of your bones." I smiled innocently and went into my room. I looked at the piece of paper Tyler handed me with Gaige's number on it. Gaige Gallagher. The smartest, and hottest, boy in our grade. I was hesitant to call him, he was known for being really shy and I didn't want to seem weird. Screw it. I put the number in my still cracked phone and pressed call.
"Hello?"
"Hey, is this Gaige Gallagher?"
"Yea, who is this?"
"It's y/n l/n. I was told we are partners for a science project."
"Oh, yea. When do you wanna work on that?"
"Well being suspended means I have literally nothing to do so whenever."
"Mind if I swing by around 3?"
"Sounds good. I live at," I told him Tyler's address and we hung up. About fifteen minutes later, someone knocked on the door. "I'll get it!" I shouted as I left my room. When I got to the door, Zack had already opened it.
"Y/n, some guy is here for you."
"Let him in, stupid." Zack stuck his tongue out at me and I returned the look. He opened the door and invited Gaige in. "Hey, Gaige. House is pretty full so we'll just work in my room. Sound like a plan?"
"Yea," he replied shyly. I led him to my room and gestured for him to sit on my bed and I sat next to him.
"What is this project even about?"
"Well, we have to chose a species and find at least 10 species related to it and draw them in a sort of family tree."
"Sounds easy enough. Can it be any species?"
"She said it has to be a species native to Africa. I was thinking, since everyone is going to do the obvious ones, like lions, giraffes and other big things, we should do something small like a meerkat... or something."
"Meerkats are cool. Let's get to work then." We looked up meerkats and other species related to them. Gaige every so often would blow his shaggy black hair out of his bright green eyes. I chuckled a little every time he crossed his eyes and blew his hair away. From my doorway I heard someone clear their throat. I looked up and my eyes met with Tyler's. "Hey, babe, need anything?"
He looked somewhat angry. "Just thought you should know, Kylie just left."
"Oh, really? What time is it?"
Gaige looked at his watch before Tyler had a chance to answer. "It's 5:34. I should probably get home."
"Oh, okay. Do you need a ride? I can ask Kelly or Chris to take you."'
"No, I only live a few blocks down."
"Oh, well then seeya. Call me when you think we should work some more."
"Alright, bye." Gaige left me and Tyler alone in my room.
"Is something wrong? You look pissed."
"Why was he sitting so close to you?"
"We were using his science book, we kinda had to sit close."
"Why did you have to work in here? You could have worked in the living room or something."
"I tried to keep him away from the kids and their craziness. Not that it matters but you have no room to talk. You and Kylie worked in your room."
"I didn't want anyone to have to deal with her. I don't want him so close to you anymore."
"Really? You're going to be like this?"
"Yes I am going to be like this. I don't like how he looks at you. I know that look... trust me it's not good."
"Relax. There was no look. I have to work with him on the project and that's it."
"He knows you're mine, right?"
"I belong to no man." I joked.
"You know what I mean. Just in case he doesn't..." Tyler brushed my hair aside and started kissing on my neck.
"Babe, stop, you'll leave a mark."
"That's the intention." He went back to sucking on my neck. When he was happy with his work, he left my neck and kissed my lips. "There. Wear your hair back next time you see him so he sees it." He went back to his room. I looked around my room for a mirror. I found a small circular hand mirror in looked in it. Clear as day, a small red spot on my neck was there.
"Thanks for that, Tyler." I sighed and plopped back onto my bed. I looked over to the corner of my room and saw my backpack. "Oh, crap!" I jumped to my feet and over to my bag. I pulled the ukulele out and hid it behind my back. I went up to Tyler's room and knocked on his door.
"Come in!" I opened the door and saw Tyler holding two things. One was a small rectangular box and the other was a bouquet of white lilies "Happy anniversary." He said with a cheesy grin. He held out the box and flowers. I pulled the ukulele out from behind my back. He gasped and his eyes widened. We traded gifts and hugged. "Open the little box!" I did as he said and saw a bracelet with a heart shaped charm.
"Oh my God, it's beautiful."
"Flip the charm over." He seemed eager for me to see the other side of it. "It's the day we met." Engraved in it was the date we met, the first day of ninth grade. Also the best day of my life. "Do you like it?"
"I love it. How did you know lilies are my favorite?"
"I just know you."
"Do you like your gift?"
"I do! I love the flowers!" He read what I wrote on it and smiled. "I love you."
"I love you too." We sat in his room for a while. I listened to him play his brand new ukulele. "You never finished teaching me how to play."
"Go get yours and I'll show you." I ran down the stairs, to my room and grabbed my ukulele, and ran back upstairs. "Chill, don't hurt yourself." I sat back down next to him and he showed me how to play. By 9, I could play the first part of "Can't Help Falling in Love."
"See, you're getting the hang of it." Tyler said once I got through it.
"How long did it take you to learn?"
"A few months."
"A few months? And here I've been working on this for like a year..."
"That doesn't matter. I'm sure you could get it faster, but I'm teaching you slowly because, well, I like spending this time with you."
"Oh, Tyler." I hugged him. "How do you always know just what to say?"
"I don't know, I just kinda make stuff up as I go." I jokingly punched his arm. "I'm tired. Are you?" I yawned. "I'll take that as a yes." He set our ukuleles up in his closet and laid back in his bed next to me.
