I opened the door to the Laundromat hopefully or the last time today. Ariel had her bag swung over her shoulder and was getting ready to go an lock up for the night.
"Hey what are you here so late? Did you wanna talk?"
I nodded and we sat ourselves on top of washing machines to chat. " I don't have anywhere to stay tonight..." I started.
"What? What happened? I can bring you home with me! Sure, my parents will wonder why their 16 year old is bringing home a girl from off the streets but-
"It's okay, I'm not from off the streets, I live in the Northwest Manor."
"Oh, yeah...Wait, You're a Northwest maid. Why can't you spend the night there if that's where you live...I'm not sure how this is an issue."
"I'm not exactly a Northwest 'maid'. " I said, using my fingers to make air quotes.
"How do you mean?"
"My name is (Y/n), (Y/n) Northwest."
Ariel's eyes widen, then her face fell into a skeptical smirk, "A Northwest? In a Laundromat? What are you pulling at (Y/n)? How come I've never heard of a (Y/n) Northwest?"
I sigh and scratch the back of my neck. "It's because I'm not perfect. I wasn't perfect like Pacifica so they did their best to get rid of me without any publicity that could put them in any bad light, so they just hid me away, made me do the things maids couldn't or wouldn't. In fact, the whole reason I picked up the dress was because a maid is on maternity leave."
It began to get harder to speak as a lump built in my throat, a lump of reality.
"So until I was twelve, I lived in the corner of Pacifica's room. She would give me her clothes she didn't like and she my meals consisted of her leftovers. Nowadays after you know... 'Nevermind all that' it didn't take us too long to buy the Manor back and now I have my own room."
Ariel's face brightened. "You have your own room, that's something."
My face dimmed.
"I sleep in the attic now. My meals are whatever I can scrap up from the kitchen without being caught. But it's okay, I like being alone in my room except for all broken heirlooms, antiques, and anything else that can hurt me." I said gesturing to my leg.
"Wow. Just...wow." Ariel said swinging herself off the washing machines. She wrapped her arms around me and enveloped me in her hug. "Spend the night with me, we can have a blast! We'll stay up late and watch the My Mummy's A Werewolf marathon and maybe even Ghost Turtle!"
I laughed out loud and we broke apart from the hug. She grabbed her purse off the washing machine and swung it back on her shoulder as I followed her out the door.
We walked in the dimly lit sidewalk, chatting quietly about our sleepover plans.
"...And we can do something ridiculous that we've never done before like put chocolate frosting in a bowl of popcorn and eat it until we get sick! How's that for a first sleepover?"
I laughed gleefully at her words, imagining that myself.
"Glory! That sounds absolutely perfect!"
