On Thursday Bobby's health had thankfully improved. He wasn't out of the hospital yet but he was doing better.
"Bela, my brain is about to explode," Jace groaned as he banged his head on my desk. "Please can we take a break?"
"Nah uh, mister. We skipped Tuesday so we're putting extra time in today," I said. "Now come on. Finish answering the questions."
Today I was like a drill sergeant with tutoring. I had printed a comprehension for Jace to read and questions for him to answer as well as language work and translations. And instead of just two hours I planned to make it four.
He bitched and whined like a kid but continued to answer the questions set for him.
"Isabela?" Came my dad's voice from outside my open door.
"Come in, papa," I said.
"Your mother says you and Jace must come down for a snack," He said. "You've been working for nearly two hours now."
"No," I shook my head. "We're still working."
"Isa," He chuckled, "you've been relentless. Let the ninõ take a break."
"Bela," Jace looked at me with pleading eyes.
"Fine," I sighed. "Just for ten minutes though."
Downstairs in the kitchen my mom had set out two plates of cookies and one glass of milk and a glass of juice for me because I don't drink milk.
"I hope you're not allergic to peanuts, Jace," Mom said to him as we sat down at the breakfast bar and put one of the plates and the glass of milk in front of him.
"No, I'm not, Mrs Scellic," He told her politely.
"Please, just call me Sara," She said with a warm smile. "Mrs Scellic makes me feel old."
"You don't look a day over thirty, mi amor," Dad said to her with a smile and then kissed her cheek.
"Ew, stop before I throw up in my mouth," I teased.
Mom laughed and then said to me, "I hear you've been acting like a real slave driver with poor Jace here."
"You have no idea," Jace sighed.
"I haven't been," I scoffed. "We're just doubling up because we skipped on Tuesday."
"Remember, filha, he's still learning. Don't give him too much to do at one time," Mom said gently.
"I'm not," I said. "I'm just helping him learn, remember."
"Could have fooled me," Jace said to me with a teasing smile.
"Oh hush," I said, returning the smile.
After eating our snack and finishing our drinks, we headed back upstairs to continue working.
Thirty minutes later Jace had finished the work and I was now marking it.
"Jace," I said to him with a smile.
"Hmm?" He hummed.
"Fifty two percent," I said.
"Woah, for real?" He grinned.
"Yup," I nodded. "See, you can totally do it if you apply yourself."
"Well hey, its a far stretch from a C but its a start," He said, still smiling.
"I think you deserve to be done for the day," I said, looking over at the time on my phone.
"So uh, what are you gonna be up to this weekend?" He asked me as he packed his stuff away.
