Instead of spending another second being crushed, I decided to take myself back home, and into my hole of a bedroom. I made my life as boring and simple as possible. I went to school, came home, and stayed in my room, never speaking to my friends or family. And certainly not to Tyler, the one person I hoped would call me and take everything back. Even Taylor had no clue what was going on. I told her that Tyler and I broke up, of course, but other than that she was as out of the loop as the rest.
It was the day before prom before I even got a call from her that I felt like answering. "Y/n? I can't believe you actually answered. You fell off the face of the Earth after Tyler and you, ya know. Are you okay? What's up?"
"I'm fine. Just been busy with school and everything."
"Anyways, are you going to prom tomorrow? I know you bought your dress and tickets earlier this year, I think you should go. It might help you cope a little more."
"I don't know. I'm not really feeling up to being around a bunch of people."
"C'mon, please?" I could hear the desperation in her voice. I knew she worried about me, I just couldn't really see why. Like I said, I wasn't even sad. Just... numb.
"Fine, if it will make you happy."
Taylor squealed on the other end, rupturing my eardrum, "thank you so much, Y/n. I'll be over tomorrow to get ready with you." We hung up and I went back to doing nothing.
The night came and went and before I knew it, Taylor was over, helping me get ready for the "biggest night" of my life. It was the first time I was actually excited about something in a long time. After hair and makeup, Taylor and I changed into our dresses and took a multitude of pictures before leaving. Once we pulled up to the school, however, I was starting to feel less than excited. "Tay, why don't we just leave?"
"Oh, hell no. You are not missing prom to go wallow in your room some more. Tonight, we are having fun. Whether you like it or not."
"I hope you see the irony of that sentence."
"I do." We got inside to the cramped gymnasium and started making small talk with a few of Taylor's other friends. Just when I thought things were going well for me, I saw him out of the corner of my eye. Tyler was here. How could I expect him to not be? It was his senior prom too. What hit me the hardest wasn't that he was there, but that he showed up with a date. And, of course, not just any date, but the she-demon herself, Jenna. The girl who tried to ruin my relationship with Tyler was now here at the dance with him.
I made an attempt to not be a self-pitying crybaby and walked over to them, "hey, Tyler, Jenna. I love your dress." I played the girl act and acted polite.
"Oh, hi, Y/n. I, uh, didn't think you'd be here."
"Yeah, Taylor kinda forced me to come." I had to bite back tears from seeing the person who meant the most to me with another girl.
"Awe, look, Ty. The little baby's gonna cry." Jenna clearly wasn't playing innocent like I was. "Tyler dumped your sorry ass, sweetie. Get over it."
Being used to Jenna's snake ways, this barely phased me. Then, Tyler laughed and walked away with her. This hit me right in my heart. To avoid looking even more like a pathetic loser, I held back tears and ran out of the room. I found a door that led to a part of the school I knew wouldn't have any students: the roof. I hiked up my dress and ran to the top of the school. Standing at the edge of the building, I could see most of the neighborhood Tyler and I lived in. It was a way different view than I was used to. I could see the houses of everyone else who lived in the area. My life is so small compared to this entire community of people. They could lose one person and still function, right? I contemplated all of the problems that had been thrown at me in the past few years and how minute they were compared to everything else around me. God, I've been so selfish. Everyone else is going through things too but all I've been concerned with is me, me, me. As I thought, I moved myself closer to the edge, not noticing the small crowd below me.
[The rest of the chapter will be in the point of view of Tyler]
I felt bad for laughing at Y/n, but I knew that with Jenna, it was either do that or suffer later. I felt someone just about run into me from behind. I turned and recognized the well-dressed boy as one of our classmates. Out of breath, he said, "dude, that girl Jenna just bitched at is on the roof. You need to come see this." In a panic, I followed him and many other people out to the front of the building. I saw her, her face stained with tears, her dress beat up from running, but she still looked as perfect as ever. At this point, I just wished it wasn't too late for me to tell her how sorry I was. How I was just scared of her growing away from me that I forced myself to do exactly that.
"Y/n!" She looked down at me, she was many feet above me, but I could see her facial expression change. "Please, come down from there. Let me explain." I was shouting so she could hear me, but it felt as if I was just having a one-on-one conversation with her.
"What is there to explain, Tyler?" She shouted in response, "I've been an idiot. I pushed you away because I was dealing with my own, stupid shit. I've been selfish."
"No, you haven't. Please, come down. We can talk about it."
She smiled weakly through the tears and ruined makeup, "no, we can't." She fell from the high point with such an elegance, it gave the horrible, tragic situation a sort of beauty. I ran towards where she landed, her face against the concrete.
The trauma from the landing caused blood to rush from her mouth and nose. I instinctively gathered her into my arms and held her as close as I could. I checked her pale neck for a pulse, only to be confirmed that she was gone. My throat closed, I couldn't make a single sound, only sob into the chest of the love of my life. People gathered even closer than before. Everything was muffled and distorted, but I could vaguely make out the sounds of people shouting and crying and yelling "call 911!"
I sat up and held her lifeless body close to my chest, running my fingers through her hair as if she was going to wake up at any minute. I'm not sure how much time went by, but I was holding her like this until the ambulance pulled up, put her in a bag on a stretcher and drove away.
SO. Now that the sad sh*t is out of the way, in case everyone is gonna ask if this is the end or not I really don't know. Like I might add one more part and/or maybe an epilogue. Thanks again to everyone for reading!
